MARTINA MOYSKI reports for ChurchMilitant.com — A renowned Catholic social scientist and expert on China’s one-child policy delivered a highly-anticipated speech to a pro-life audience at the Bringing America Back to Life (BABL) convention in Independence, Ohio on March 6.
Steven Mosher delivered his address, titled “AOC Says She Is Afraid to Have Children Because of Climate Change. Should Anyone Else Be?” to a standing-room-only crowd at the Embassy Suites Independence.
Mosher was the first American researcher to conduct anthropological research in rural China in 1979 after the Cultural Revolution. His research revealed that forced abortions were common in the country as part of its one-child policy. He was a pro-choice atheist at the time, but witnessing these traumatic abortions and the suffering connected to them led him to reconsider his convictions and to eventually become a practicing, pro-life Roman Catholic.
Mosher is president of the Population Research Institute (PRI), which claims as its mission exposing the myth of overpopulation, exposing human rights abuses committed in population control programs and making the case that people are the world’s greatest resource.
Mosher said hospitals devoted to the birth of babies are being turned into geriatric clinics throughout the world.
He said the one-child policy during China’s Cultural Revolution — which resulted in the death of 400 million — is wreaking its damage on the present. Even though the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has conducted a two-child policy since 2016, many young Chinese are choosing not to marry or have any children. China’s current birth rate is one of the lowest in the world. There is also a severe shortage of women — the consequence of the country’s cultural preference for boys that ended the lives of girls through abortion and infanticide.
He asserted that China’s rise to power will be limited because the Communist state has killed off its future.
Mosher further stated that the coronavirus that was “made in China” was generated by the incompetence or evil of the state — or both — and is being handled in as harmful a way as were the pregnant Chinese women of the one-child policy era, noting that those discovered to have a fever are either locked into their homes or taken to detention centers.
Mosher’s books include Bully of Asia: Why “China’s Dream” Is the New Threat to World Order (2017) which argues the hegemonic dreams of China pose a “truly mortal challenge” to U.S. interests across the globe and One Woman’s Fight Against China’s One-Child Policy (1993) which describes how a Chinese population control worker trained to enforce her government’s “one couple, one child” policy through forced sterilizations, abortions and infanticide fought to keep her second baby.
As a Catholic and an expert on Chinese affairs, the pro-life advocate says the Chinese-Vatican agreement is “a betrayal of the Catholic Church in China” on several levels:
It betrays the authority of the papacy by giving the Chinese Communist Party the right to name bishops. It betrays the underground Church in China, a Church which not only has survived decades of persecution at the hands of the authorities but is now, once again, under siege. And — I would argue — because it is a secret agreement, it betrays the truth by allowing both sides to misrepresent it.
Mosher points out that “a secret agreement keeps Catholics in China and around the world in the dark about whatever compromises the Vatican has made. Even worse, it also allows the Communist authorities to misrepresent the agreement to the Chinese faithful in whichever way they choose.”
Other convention speakers included Dr. Monica Miller, founder and director of Citizens for a Pro-life Society; Dr. Alan Keyes, author, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and past presidential candidate for the United States; Michael Voris, founder and president of St. Michael’s Media/Church Militant; and William J. Federer, author and president of Amerisearch, Inc.
To the surprise of BABL attendees, President Trump sent an official letter to the convention, saying:
I send my warmest greetings to those gathered at the Bringing America Back to Life Convention. Life is the greatest gift given to us by our Creator. It is our sacred duty as a society, therefore, to protect the right to life. I am grateful to patriots like you who work tirelessly to provide hope and support to women and their families. Through compassion and generosity, your noble work promotes a culture of life and love.
BABL president Molly Smith has been active in the pro-life movement for over 30 years and served as executive director of Cleveland Right to Life for more than a decade.
The convention is sponsored by the Cleveland Right to Life Educational Fund which relies on donations to promote the “uncompromisingly clear message that ‘All life must be protected and respected from the moment of conception to natural death.'”
