Martina Moyski  reports for ChurchMilitant.com — Ireland’s Department of Health delivered a damning report to the legislature of the Republic of Ireland on June 30, documenting that 6,666 babies lost their lives to abortion during the country’s first year of legalized abortion.

“It’s the first time in 18 years that there has been an increase in the number of abortions and the first time in our history that thousands of innocent unborn babies have had their lives ended with the full backing of Irish law,” Ireland’s Pro-Life Campaign spokesperson, Maeve O’Hanlon said in a statement

Deconstructing a Lie

The report records lives lost between December 2018, when the Health Act that legalized abortion became law — after the repeal of the constitution was approved by referendum earlier that year — and December 2019.

“The reality has caught up with the lie that repeal would make Ireland a kinder, more gentle and compassionate country,” O’Hanlon said, referring to the horrific numbers and the loss of human life they represent.

The Irish pro-life leaders deconstructed what “a kinder, more gentle and compassionate” Ireland means.

Since the legalization of abortion in Ireland, the number of Irish babies who have been aborted has more than doubled compared to the number of Irish women on average who traveled to the United Kingdom for abortions each year before legalization, she explained.

In the year before the legalization, she pointed out, 2,879 Irish women traveled to the United Kingdom to end the life of their unborn baby — a trend that had been on a steady decline.

It can be assumed, she calculated, that well over 3,000 Irish babies that would have otherwise lived, died by abortion in the first year of legal abortion in Ireland.

“Those adopting an attitude to the latest figures of ‘nothing to see here, everything is fine and going to plan’ are downplaying the loss of life caused by the recent introduction of abortion here, as evidenced in [the] numbers,” she said.

The Dublin-based pro-family group Life Institute said the figures were “horrific and heartbreaking,” and they prove when abortion is legalized, the number of abortions increases.

“We were told in the referendum that a yes vote wouldn’t lead to an increase in the number of abortions, but that claim, like so many others, has been shown to be a lie,” the Institute said.

“Simon Harris and Leo Varadkar [Irish politicians leading the abortion charge] assured us that abortion would be ‘legal and rare.’ How can anyone call 6,666 abortions rare?” the pro-family group remarked in a Gript column.

Doctors Profiting

O’Hanlon explained how the “profound injustice” of the new law plays out in the pocketbooks of the general practitioners (GPs) who perform the abortions.

“GPs are paid €450 by the State for every abortion they perform, more than twice what they would typically receive for caring for a mother and her baby during pregnancy,” she said. “This is the stark, shocking reality of what is now permitted in Ireland, all in the name of progress.”

“Before the law changed, GPs entered their surgeries with the sole intention of preserving life,” the pro-life advocate said. “But for many GPs, that has all changed as they now facilitate the taking of innocent human life as part of their daily work, in the full knowledge that it has nothing to do with genuine health care.”

Referring to the language used to cast spells on uninformed voters, she said: “Sure, we can avert our eyes from the truth of what is now legally sanctioned by continuing to dress it up with words like ‘choice,’ but that won’t change in any way the profound injustice of what the new law permits.”

Online Pro-Life Rally

On the cusp of the fallout from the data, Ireland is holding its annual, pro-life event Rally for Life from July 1–5. This year because of COVID-19, it’s online.

Films like A Silent Killer: Savita’s Story, a documentary about the tragic death of a mother in an Irish maternity ward, and the box-office hit Unplanned, which tells the true story of Planned Parenthood defector Abby Johnson, are featured.

Online time for reflection and prayer is scheduled on July 3 at the rally’s first-ever prayer vigil, livestreamed from St. Mary’s Dominican Priory in Cork.

Speakers including Obianuju Ekeocha, Lila Rose, Jeanne Mancini, Eduardo Verástegui and Jonathon Van Maren are scheduled for July 4.

Despite the massacre of over 6,000 innocents, O’Hanlon expressed belief that public attitudes can change, saying, “The public has had to endure years of cleverly choreographed campaigning for abortion, led by some of our most senior politicians.”

“But as it starts to dawn on voters that they were misled every step of the way before the 2018 referendum, I believe attitudes will start to change,” she said. “Developments like today’s heart-breaking figures will help propel that change.”
