Pope Francis decries failure of bishops in abuse scandal

HANNAH BROCKHAUS reports for CNA/EWTN News --In Ireland on Saturday, Pope Francis said the anger of Catholics at bishops’ failure in response to the sexual abuse crisis is appropriate and that he shares those feelings.

“With regard to the most vulnerable, I cannot fail to acknowledge the grave scandal caused in Ireland by the abuse of young people by members of the Church charged with responsibility for their protection and education,” he said to Irish authorities Aug. 25.

“The failure of ecclesiastical authorities – bishops, religious superiors, priests and others – adequately to address these repugnant crimes has rightly given rise to outrage, and remains a source of pain and shame for the Catholic community.” He added: “I myself share those sentiments.”

In his first official speech of the apostolic voyage to Ireland for the World Meeting of Families, the pope said he hopes the “failings of many” will underscore the importance of protecting children and vulnerable adults by all of society.

Speaking off-the-cuff, the pope added that Benedict's involvement continues to push Church leaders to “remedy past mistakes and adopt stringent rules to ensure that they do not happen again.”

Francis said his recent letter to the Church affirmed a greater commitment “to eliminate this scourge in the Church; at any cost – moral and suffering.”

He said he is “very conscious” of the circumstances of the most vulnerable and emphasized the goodness of the child, which he said is “a precious gift of God, to be cherished, encouraged to develop his or her gifts, and guided to spiritual maturity and human flourishing.”

“All of us are aware of how urgent it is to provide our young people with wise guidance and sound values on their journey to maturity,” he stated.

In his speech, the pope also spoke out in defense of the “right to life” of the unborn, criticizing the materialistic “throwaway culture” which makes people indifferent to the poor and to the most defenseless.

Speaking about his reason for being in Dublin, the World Meeting of Families, he called it “a prophetic witness” to the rich heritage of ethical and spiritual values, which it is a duty to cherish and protect and that the Church wants to support people as they try to respond, “faithfully and joyfully to their God given vocation in society.”

There are many difficulties faced by families today – nevertheless, they are “are the glue of society,” he said, and should not be taken for granted.

The World Meeting of Families, he explained, “is not only an opportunity for families to reaffirm their commitment to loving fidelity, mutual assistance and reverence for God’s gift of life in all its forms, but also to testify to the unique role played by the family in the education of its members and the development of a sound and flourishing social fabric.”

Calling the entire world a type of family, he said bonds of common humanity should drive us to take care of the weakest among us, even though we are often left feeling powerless in the face of “persistent evils,” such as racism, ethnic hatred, violence, and contempt for human dignity.

Among these is also the refugee crisis, he said, calling it “perhaps the most disturbing” challenge to consciences. “How much we need to recover, in every instance of political and social life, the sense of being a true family of peoples!” he urged

So, what's been happening in Dublin?

DUBLIN - As the 2018 World Meeting of Families rolls on this week in Dublin, participants face the dilemma each day of choosing among a staggering variety of panels, talks, exhibits and other programs, often scheduled at precisely the same time in different venues.

A ‘revolution of tenderness’ and some Vegas-style crooning

One of Francis’s closest allies and advisers on Thursday told the World Meeting of Families that the pope is pursuing a “revolution of tenderness,” which is an expression of the “motherhood” of God and the “strongest antidote to selfishness and a ‘throw-away’ culture.”

Cardinal Óscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras, the coordinator of the pope’s “C9” council of cardinal advisers from around the world, spoke to a crowd of several hundred people Thursday morning during day two of the World Meeting.

The call to tenderness, he said, is at the heart of Francis’s “messianic prophetic Samaritan Christianity” as opposed to a Church that’s “narcissistic” or “self-referential.” Francis, Rodriguez said, “wants us to put aside the fear of making mistakes,” and be more afraid of “imprisoning us in structures.”

Opening his talk, Rodriguez channeled a Las Vegas crooner, slipping into a strong baritone and leading the crowd in a Spanish-language anthem about Francis and the joy of the Gospel, drawing strong applause when he wrapped up.

James Martin packs the house

If the World Meeting of Families, as a local paper suggested is a “Disneyland for the Devout,” then American Jesuit Father James Martin’s presentation on LGBT issues and the Church was Thursday’s main attraction. Tickets were sold out, cameras filled the room, and people fought to get inside - throwing out both elbows and words (not to mention, apparently, any sense of Catholic piety).

Not a single seat was left empty, and people struggled just to get a look at the Jesuit priest. Though the presentation took place in a small hall, it easily could have filled one of the larger venues.

Tobin on the ‘fresh direction’ in ‘Amoris’

In the first appearance of a U.S. prelate following Cardinal Donald Wuerl’s withdrawal from the World Meeting of Families, Cardinal Joe Tobin of Newark, New Jersey kicked off his Thursday panel with a reflection on Francis’s “fresh direction” given to pastoral theology and practice on marriage.

On Sex and the Theology of the Body

“How can a priest, who is unmarried, tell people about family, sex and relationships?” asked Italian politician and academic Rocco Buttiglione during his morning panel at the World Meeting of Families.

“Priests are not supposed to have sex, at least in some cases…” he joked.

Buttiglione urged not being judgmental of homosexual relationships, and instead to engage with honesty and friendship.

Amoris Laetitia cartoons

A website promoting Amoris Laetitia and the World Meeting of Families, amoris.ie, has also been rolled out and features, in addition to the icon, cartoons that supposedly depict lessons from the document. These “Amoris animations” were designed by a company that has previously produced cartoons about climate change for CAFOD, the UK bishops’ scandal-ridden charity. It has also produced a video on Blessed Oscar Romero.

Amoris.ie also promotes a 64-page “parish programme” on Amoris Laetitia. The fifth of six sessions in that program shows a 13-minute video that is “a selection of short interviews with people about their different experiences of family life. Interviewees to include parents who have chosen not to marry; a couple in a second union; someone who is gay or lesbian; a single parent, etc.”

“The Church upholds the ideal of marriage as a committed, permanent union between a man and a woman open to new life,” the program teaches. “However, the Church must also support families who do not match this ideal.” The program offers this half-true trope, the gist of which is used by dissident Catholics to discourage the faithful from stating obvious truths about intrinsically evil actions: “It is unwise to make judgements from outside of particular situations, without full awareness of all the factors involved in the choices people have made or the realities that exist behind outward appearances.”

Amoris.ie also offers free “Amoris cubes” to anyone willing to pay shipping and handling. These cubes, which are marketed as a great First Communion gift, are made of foam. The cubes’ six sides have “messages on practical ways we can show love in the family, with friends, neighbours and even people we don’t get on with!” Families should toss the cube and try to incorporate whatever message comes up into their lives that day, the promotional materials encourage. These materials suggest the cube be incorporated into First Communion Masses.

















On opening day, Carninal Farrell calls for building more LGBT bridges

CARDINAL KEVIN FARRELL, head of the Vatican's Dicastery for Laity, the Family and Life, said the church needs God to help build bridges, to communicate and to help understands that "we need to speak to each other and accept each other as children of God".

Speaking to media on the first full day of the World Meeting of Families, the cardinal said that was the message that the international gathering was hoping to achieve.

Asked about building bridges with Catholic women like Mary McAleese, former president of Ireland, who said she would stay away from the Pastoral Congress because of its failure to be more inclusive of LGBT families and because of the Church's treatments of women. The cardinal said he was "always open to respectful dialogue with everybody"
"W all the have to learn to deal with each other, and the most important aspect of dialogue and building bridges is to listen to people. We don't all have to agree with each other every time; we don't all see the world and the future of the world or the changing culture of the world in the same way" he said.

Some 37.000 people from 115 countries attending events at the Congress.

O Ireland

ROBERT ROYAL, editor-in-chief of The Catholic Thing, writes : 'Ireland seems to have two kinds of weather. Either it's raining, or it's about to rain. At least that's how it's been the past week as the residual wind and water from Hurricane Ernesto made landfall in the West.

I've been hiking there - my annual summer strategem to come down to earth is to spend some strenuous days outdoors, as far away as possible from the news cycles and turmoil in the Church and the world. The skies held off enough that we got in a great long loop through the high rocky hills known as the Burren and a simple walk along the Cliffs of Moher. Today it will be the walking pilgrimage up Croagh Patrick.

Geologic time isn't eternity, of course, but when you put yourself in vigorous contact with natural features that have taken hundreds of millions of years to form, it puts human things in different perspective.

A very good thing, too, because all this is prelude to the events that will take place later this week in Dublin and Knock. Events (plural), because in addition to the ill-timed and partly ill-conceived World Meeting of Familes (WMOF), there are also various 'alternative' gatherings. I myself will give the concluding lecture at one of them in support of the traditional family (along with Cardinal Burke, Fr. Thomas Weinandy, Edward Pentin, and other friends). More about this, I hope, in special reports, later in the week.

The WMOF has been rocked, before it's even begun. The new abuse revelations caused Cardinals O'Malley and Wuerl, scheduled speakers both, to withdraw. Over 10,000 people signed a petition calling for the disinvitation of Fr. James Martin, S.J., well-known advocate of 'building bridges' to people with same-sex attractions and other disorders. That hasn't happened. But the negative publicity probably caused the conference organizers to keep two LGBT groups from renting booths. The excuse: they didn't know how much space would be available for exhibitors. Nothing to do with Catholic doctrine, of course.

A spokesman for one of the groups opined that Pope Francis wants to accept gays, but shadowy conservative forces in the Vatican are stopping him. That's not at all clear. The pope has urged Italian bishops not to admit men even suspected of homosexual tendencies to the seminary. And has even wondered aloud how so many have entered the priesthood.

It's true that Cardinal Kevin Farrell, a native of Ireland who as head of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life was responsible for organizing the WMOF, gave a glowing endorsement to Martin's book Building a Bridge, saying that it would 'help LGBT Catholics feel more at home in what is, after all, their church.'

But no. The Church is not theirs - or his, or mine. It's Christ's. He and a long tradition have left us pretty explicit instructions about this and many other matters.
Meanwhile, Irish gays and dissident women have been publicly lamenting that they don't mutually support each other enough. Women have been organizing, though. On Saturday, the day Pope Francis arrives, Trinity College's School of Religion will be hosting an independent event, 'Voices Pope Francis Will Not Hear.' But it would be difficult for anyone these days not to have heard these 'voices' since they are speaking on progressive subjects so familiar that they're miles beyond banal: the Church's marginalization of women, vilification of LGBT Catholics, contraception, abortion, the abuse crisis.

The program for the official WMOF doesn't break much new ground either. Most of the topics seem to be the kinds of things people professionally involved in family work do on a regular basis. No harm in that, of course, and it's always a good thing when even two or three are gathered in His name. But the Irish just voted, in large numbers, to give themselves the right to kill their own children in the womb. Yet so far as I can see, the word abortion does not appear in the title of any session.

None of this seems likely to make a difference to the global crisis of the family - and the global crisis of the Church at the moment.

Whether this WMOF is going to have an impact will largely depend on what Pope Francis says and does. His concluding homily at the previous (2015) World Meeting of Families, in Philadelphia, was startling. He turned the Gospel of the day - he who's not against us is with us - into a rebuke of Catholics being too 'narrow.' I was covering the event for EWTN and it didn't quite leave me speechless - if only because you can't be speechless live on air. But it was clear - we were in the midst of the two Synods on the Family - that he was trying to stretch things in the directions we've since seen him take.

There were 40,000 people from all over the world at that event and he did eventually speak, as is his wont, of little acts of kindness and affection within the family, and the larger realities of the covenant between man and woman. But the way he set the tone - introducing ambiguity and even criticism of strong ideas about family - colored everything else.

In a similar vein, someone in Ireland or Rome (or both) approved a WMOF banner that is set up in almost every Irish Church this week. It quotes Pope Francis: 'How much better family life would be if we used the words . . . Please, Thank you, I'm sorry.' Good counsel, in its modest way.

But given the immense and undeniable storms striking the family - everything from legal and cultural norms that encourage easy divorce, the demographic collapse of virtually every developed nation owing to contraception and abortion, the deliberate blurring of male and female, the creeping validation of same-sex relationships within the Church Herself (and the damage sex abuse has done to the Church's credibility), Ireland - and the world - need a much stronger message.

Fr. James Martin tells Vatican meeting: Invite LGBT to be Eucharistic ministers

DOUG MAINWARING and PETE BAKLINSKI report for LifeSiteNews – Vatican advisor and pro-LGBT Jesuit priest Fr. James Martin told participants at the World Meeting of Families in Ireland that active homosexuals “should be invited into parish ministries” specifically mentioning them becoming “eucharistic ministers” in order to make them welcomed and accepted in the Catholic Church.

“As I’ve mentioned, there is a tendency to focus on the sexual morality of L.G.B.T. parishioners, which is wrong, because, first, you often have no idea what their sexual lives are like; and, second, even if they are falling short, they are not the only ones,” he said.

“As a result, L.G.B.T. people may feel they have to be dishonest about who they are and that they have no place in ministries. Like everyone else in your parish who does not live up to the Gospels—which is everyone—L.G.B.T. people should be invited into parish ministries: eucharistic ministers, music ministers, lectors, bereavement ministry and every ministry,” he added.

While the Catholic Church in the United States is beaten down, gripped with story after story of predatory sexual abuse and cover-ups by priests and prelates — the vast majority of which are homosexual in nature – the priest used his platform at the Vatican-run event to lobby for the Church to normalize homosexuality and transgenderism.

Fr. Martin’s presentation was titled “Showing Welcome and Respect in our Parishes for ‘LGBT’ People and their Families.

Cardinal Raymond Burke told LifeSiteNews in a 2014 interview that priests should "try to stay close" to parish members "living in public sin in a homosexual relationship" so as to "try to help them to leave the sinful relationship and to begin to lead a chaste life."

He directly addressed the topic of open homosexuals who seek ministry roles within the parish.

"Those people [who] are living in that way certainly cannot have any leadership role in the parish, because it would give the impression to parishioners that the way they are living is perfectly alright. Because, [when] we lead in a parish, in a certain way, we are giving witness to a coherent Catholic life. And people who are not coherent with their Catholic faith aren’t given leadership roles. They are not asked, for instance, to be a lector at the Holy Mass — or [to] assume some other leadership position — until they have rectified their situation and gone through a conversion of life and then are ready to give such leadership," he said.

"On the one hand, it certainly gives scandal to parishioners with regard to a very essential part of our life, our sexuality, [and] what it means. On the other hand, it's not good for the two people involved in the disordered relationship because it also gives them the idea that the Church somehow approves of what they're doing," he added.

Over and over again throughout his talk, Martin spoke of ‘LGBT Catholics,’ reinforcing the notion that God creates men and women gay, lesbian or transgender.

“They do not choose their orientation...You don’t choose your orientation or gender identity any more than you choose to be left-handed. It’s not a choice. And it’s not an addiction. Thus, it is not a sin simply to be L.G.B.T. Far less, it is not something to ‘blame’ on someone, like parents,” he said.

Martin undermined clergy and laity who continue to embrace the Church’s wisdom and best pastoral practices regarding same-sex attraction, saying, that “most L.G.B.T. Catholics have been deeply wounded by the church.”

“They may have been mocked, insulted, excluded, condemned or singled out for critique, either privately or from the pulpit. They may never have heard the term ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ expressed in any positive way or even a neutral way,” he said.

The Catholic Church teaches that God created humans as “male and female” and gave them to each other in marriage so they could “increase and multiply.” Sexual attraction and sexual acts between a male and female are specifically created by God for the purpose of procreation. The Catholic Church is logical and consistent when she teaches that homosexual acts are “acts of grave depravity” and “intrinsically disordered” since they are “contrary to the natural law” in that they “close the sexual act to the gift of life.”

“They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved,” states the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Church also teaches that same-sex attraction is “objectively disordered” since God created members of the opposite sex to be attracted to one another for the sake of procreation.

Fr. Martin said that "like any group, L.G.B.T. people bring special gifts to the church."

He laid out a number of points for how parishes can be more “welcoming” to homosexuals and their gifts and stop “discriminating” against them.

Laity and clergy should “get facts, not myths, about sexual orientation and gender identity from scientific and social-scientific sources, not from rumors and misinformed and homophobic online sites.”

Laity and clergy should be “attentive to language that [homosexuals] say they find offensive and needlessly hurtful: ‘sodomy’ for example. Names, words and terminology matter.”

The “lived experience” of homosexuals should be listened to.

“We don’t treat other Catholics by simply repeating church teaching without considering their lived experience. So avoid doing that with L.G.B.T. people.”

Martin stressed that homosexuals should be talked about in homilies.

“Acknowledge them in homilies or parish presentations as full members of the parish, without judgment and not as fallen-away Catholics,” he said.

He said that laity and clergy should not “reduce” LGBT people to the Church’s call to chastity.

“Don’t reduce gays and lesbians to the call to chastity we all share as Christians. L.G.B.T. people are more than their sexual lives. But sometimes that’s all they hear about. Remember not to focus solely on sexuality.”

Martin criticized parishes and dioceses where he said active homosexuals are not treated like other Christians.

“In fact, recently some American parishes have fired L.G.B.T. people after they were legally married. And something about these situations always mystified me.”

He called on Catholics to be advocates for homosexuals.

“Advocate for them. Be prophetic. There are many times when the church can provide a moral voice for this persecuted community.”

The Vatican appointed Father Martin as a communications consultant in 2017.

After Father Martin accepted an award from the dissident pro-gay group New Ways Ministry, he published a book on how the Church should be more accepting of the homosexual lifestyle. Four U.S. Catholic bishops have endorsed it.

One of those Cardinals is Kevin Farrell, previously a close collaborator with disgraced former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who now serves as prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life which is charged with overseeing the World Meeting of Families.

The Jesuit's record of pro-gay activism is lengthy and ranges from his many speeches and media appearances promoting homosexuality to his retweeting of a complaint that priests can’t “bless” gay unions to suggesting that the Church is full of “homophobia” and “marginalizes” the same-sex attracted.

He supports gay men kissing each other during the sign of peace at Mass, says that a Catholic attending a same-sex “wedding” is like attending a Jewish wedding, and suggests that his critics are secretly gay themselves.

Fr. Martin says homosexual priests should “come out” about their sexual proclivities, but has publicly declined to say whether he himself is gay.

: 'I don’t believe that this is about trying to get Catholics to treat Catholics who are homosexual better.

Rather, this is part of a larger, concerted effort to normalize sodomy, which is a sin that “cries to heaven”.

When I began this post, I set out to offer examples from the talk with my own reactions. However, this is an example where there are too many points that would require too much space.

Suffice to say that Martin’s talk was a nightmare of manipulation and misdirection.

If you listen to or read it, be on the look out for the premises he simply wants you to accept. Be mindful of his slippery use of words, partial quotes. Watch how he sets you up with emotional anecdotes about how mean and homophobic people are (insinuation: if they believe and repeat what the Church teaches).

Among the most pernicious things was his stitching in references to “lived experience”. When you see from catholics the phrase “lived experience” be on your guard. They working to oppose, erode and replace the foundations of Catholic theology. Essentially, they use “lived experience” to justify whatever the hell they want.

I have such respect for “gays” … that I won’t lie about them.

Homosexual acts are clearly wrong. Our parts are intended by God to fit a certain way. They are ordered to each other in a complimentary way. God made us to live the human life in a properly ordered way, according to our human nature which He created. We can choose not to live that way. If we have inclinations not to live as God made us, that doesn’t mean that God made the aberrant inclination. God makes all people. People with disordered inclinations are, of course, people and, hence, God made them. But God didn’t make them to be people with disorders. God foresees and allows disorders, but that doesn’t make the disorders the norm. All human beings are intended to live the human life in a properly ordered way. Those who have some disorder have a harder time doing that.

We believe, however that overcoming that disorder, which will entail suffering, will bring them great merit and beautiful rewards in heaven, if not on earth.

Same-sex attraction is a disordered attraction. God doesn’t make disordered attraction. He foresees and permits disorders, according to His plan. But it is not part of the normal ordering of living the human life.


Christian charity dictates that we strive for what is truly the good of the other. That means, when our relationship merits or dictates, careful, kind and humble presentation of the truth. We must not treat anybody with cold cruelty. We should be ready with the spiritual and corporal works of mercy when required (which is more often than we sometimes acknowledge). But, in desiring to be kind, we must not call sin good.

If you fail in charity, say you are sorry, make amends, make changes so that vice doesn’t take root.

But don’t lie out of false mercy. That’s cruelty. That’s the blow upon the bruise.

LISA BOURNE writes : 'To not tell Catholics who identify as LGBT that homosexual acts will lead them to hell is actually showing them hate. This was the bold message delivered Wednesday to the family conference running concurrent to the Vatican’s LGBT-affirming World Meeting of Families (WMOF) in Dublin, Ireland this week.

Telling the truth to LGBT Catholics is urgent, LifeSiteNews’ co-founder and Editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen said, because we decide where we’re going for all of eternity by our choices and actions during our lives.

“That’s the seriousness of what we’re dealing with here,” said Westen. “And that’s the seriousness we need to convey to all those in our lives who are afflicted with sexual confusion.”

“It’s hate not to tell LGBT Catholics that gay sex leads to hell,” he told attendees at “A Conference of Catholic Families.”

Westen noted for the audience how not more than 10-minutes’ walk from the Conference locale Jesuit Father James Martin would be delivering the message to Catholic families at the Vatican-presented WMOF that homosexuality and transgenderism are normal and should be welcomed as such in Church life.

Indeed, the Vatican advisor and pro-LGBT Jesuit priest Fr. Martin told participants at the WMOF today that homosexuals and their families must be welcomed into parishes and “invited into parish ministries” specifically mentioning them becoming “eucharistic ministers.” He called on Catholics to be advocates for homosexuals.

Pro-life and family Catholics were incensed that the ubiquitous LGBT-affirming activist priest would speak at the event, some petitioning against it or declining to attend because of the scandal Martin’s dissent from Church teaching on sexuality would create.

Martin’s appearance was one of several signs in the months leading up to the WMOF signaling an LGBT affirmation rooted in the event.

There were also images of same-sex couples and pro-homosexual text included in WMOD promotional material, LGBT language was used in a WMOF brochure created to seek volunteers for the event, and a video produced by the Irish bishops to prepare Catholics for the WMOF cast Church teaching on homosexuality in a negative light.

Concerns over the LGBT push via the WMOF led the Lumen Fidei Institute to organize “A Conference of Catholic Families” as a WMOF alternative for Catholics that would honor Christ’s vision for marriage and family life based on magisterial Church teaching.

Well over 400 gathered in Dublin for the Conference running for two days and live streamed, featuring several leading voices of Catholic orthodoxy. Speakers at the event include Cardinal Raymond Burke (video address), Fr. Thomas Weinandy, Dr. Robert Royal, Dr. Gerard van den Aardweg, LifeSiteNews' John-Henry Westen, John Smeaton, Edward Pentin, Bishop Athanasius Schneider (video address), and others.

To illustrate that one cannot be silent about the dangers of homosexual activity, Westen pointed to the 1986 document from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) titled, “Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons,” which emphasized the necessity of “clearly stating that homosexual activity is immoral.”

“But we wish to make it clear that departure from the Church's teaching, or silence about it, in an effort to provide pastoral care is neither caring nor pastoral,” it states. “Only what is true can ultimately be pastoral. The neglect of the Church's position prevents homosexual men and women from receiving the care they need and deserve.”

“This is the teaching of the Church,” Westen said. “What we are hearing 10 minutes away is not.”

“It is actually not caring and not pastoral to be silent on these things,” he added.

Ireland has had huge and heavy crosses to bear, said Westen, citing that the country had received no support from Rome in 2015 on its same-sex “marriage” referendum, nor for the abortion referendum earlier this year. Same-sex “marriage was embraced and the country’s eighth amendment protecting the lives of preborn babies was overturned.

The question becomes very real for parents, he told the Conference, and implored Catholics to be faithful in their prayer life, and to make sure they are practicing the faith in the sexual realm.

Westen reminded the Conference that the first vision seen by the three shepherd children of Fatima in 1917 was a vision of hell, interesting, he said, because Our Lady wanted to point to the errors that were upcoming.

The Blessed Mother also made a telling prediction to Jacinta regarding impurity, also saying; "More souls go to Hell because of sins of the flesh than for any other reason.”

Westen referenced several sources, some of them unlikely, to explain the logic and concrete need in acting to save sexually confused souls from hell.

These included atheist performer Penn Jillette who’d asked in 2008, “How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible, and not tell them that?”

“It’s hate not to tell same-sex-attracted Catholics that gay sex leads to hell,” Westen stated. “It’s not love - as what it’s painted as 10 minutes’ walk from here.”

Westen noted there are many studies showing the detrimental effects to the body, mind, emotions of same-sex behavior, including a 20-year shorter lifespan, abuse, and sexually transmitted diseases.

“This lifestyle harms your body, your mind and your heart, but it also harms your soul,” Westen said. “And it is hate not to tell same-sex attracted people that.”

Regarding transgenderism, he pointed out how it would be considered mentally ill to surgically remove any other healthy body part, but in the case of healthy sexual organs, it’s considered fine and good, paid for by tax dollars and celebrated - even when done to little children.

A most common line heard when you confront any of this is to be called a hater and a bigot, Westen said, but the reality is doing so means you love same-sex attracted individuals.

“We are called to pray for the grace to love the things that God loves and hate the things that God hates,” he said, citing a priest at a recent retreat he attended, also noting that penitents pray that they “detest all their sins” in the Act of Contrition.

“How many of us actually detest sins?” asked Westen. “Have we been asking for the grace to detest sin? We need to be.”

The Catholic laity has to beg Church leaders to actually do what they’re called to do, he said, because it’s tough to stand up on these truths, recalling the sad example of Ireland’s Church hierarchy recently agreeing to counsel those in a same-sex “marriage.”

The late Columbian Cardinal Alfonzo Trujillo had said that allowing homosexual adoption equates to moral violence against the child, Westen noted, and the cardinal had explained that it was out of love that the Church was pointing out these dangers.

Pope Benedict XVI spoke repeatedly about the issue as well, saying in 2008 that the Church must “protect man from self-destruction,” and later in 2010, stating how the Fatima message was evident in that “the greatest persecution of the Church comes not from her enemies without, but arises from sin within the Church.”

Guinean Cardinal Sarah spoke in March of 2017 about a “serious crisis of faith” not only especially “among many priests and bishops,” as well as “the serious crisis that the Church is going through: relativism in doctrinal, moral and disciplinary teaching, grave abuses, the desacralization and trivialization of the Sacred Liturgy”

Westen also quoted Our Lady of Akita in 1973 saying the work of the devil would infiltrate the Church and cause division among prelates.

“You can watch all the sufferings we are now experiencing with joy,” Westen said, because you know that in the end the Immaculate Heart will triumph.”

He told the Dublin Conference how Sister Lucia, the Fatima seer who lived to adulthood, had recounted in a letter to the late Cardinal Carlo Caffara that Our Lady told her “the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family.”

And he said Our Lady had told Lucia that those who work for the sanctity of marriage and family would be opposed, but that she had already crushed the serpent’s head.

Westen urged those at the Conference to be no longer silent in defense of children, the Catholic and liturgy, and the Eucharistic Lord. The right and duty for the lay faithful to do so is affirmed by both Canon Law and St, Thomas Aquinas, he added (Can. 212 §3) and (II-II Q. 33, art. IV.) respectively.

“We must be silent no more,” Westen said. “We must not allow the abusers of our children to have the pedestal as they’re having 10 minutes away.”


















Catholics launch ‘counter-revolution’ against ‘errant shepherds’ inside Church

JAMES RISDON reports for LifeSiteNews – Faithful Catholics are launching a counter-revolution in Ireland this week against “errant shepherds” within the church, says Lumen Fidei Institute founder Anthony Murphy.

"Let's turn to God. Let's ignore these errant shepherds and let's call them out and name them and pray for good shepherds," said Murphy during his August 22 opening remarks at the “Conference of Catholic Families,” an alternate conference to the currently running World Meeting of Families (WMOF) organized by the Vatican.

"This is what we've started this week here in Ireland, the counter-revolution against the enemies inside the church," he said.



The conference, hosted by the Lumen Fidei Institute, was organized by Catholics to promote the Catholic Church’s constant and unchanging teaching on marriage and family life. Speakers at the event include Cardinal Raymond Burke (video address), Fr. Thomas Weinandy, Dr. Robert Royal, Dr. Gerard van den Aardweg, LifeSiteNews' John-Henry Westen, John Smeaton, Edward Pentin, Bishop Athanasius Schneider (video address), and others.

The idea for the Conference of Catholic Families arose after WMOF organizers made it clear that homosexuality was to be portrayed positively at the event.

Program material for the “catechesis and faith education” period in the run-up to the WMOF explicitly portrayed homosexual couples as an appropriate form of the Christian family.

A video put out by the Irish bishops to prepare families for the WMOF also contained an interview with an LGBT activist who said she’s “upset” with Catholic teaching on homosexuality.

Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, who is overseeing the WMOF, said the event would be “an inclusive event, open to all families.”

Indeed, Vatican advisor and pro-LGBT Jesuit priest Fr. Drawing upon Scripture, Murphy reminded the faithful during his talk of God's instructions to the prophet Ezekiel regarding bad shepherds.

In chapter 34 of that book, God instructs the prophet to warn the spiritual leaders of Israel they are headed for disaster because they have been feeding their own appetites and not tending to the people in their charge.

"Look, I am against the shepherds," God states in Ezekiel 3410-11. "I shall take my flock out of their charge and henceforth not allow them to feed my flock. And the shepherds will stop feeding themselves, because I shall rescue my sheep from their mouths to stop them from being food for them."

Murphy noted that this passage was from the readings for Mass on the day of the opening of the WMOF.

“Now, isn’t that prophetic,” he said.

That biblical passage closes with God promising that He will Himself take care of His people.

NACF President : Are we witnessing ‘Vatican revolution’ against family?

DR. THOMAS WARD, President of our National Association of Catholic Families, has suggested that recent developments in the war against the family coming from the highest levels within the Catholic Church, indicate the arrival of the final battle between God and Satan.

“Is this the final greatest historical confrontation between the Church and the anti-church, the Gospel and the anti-gospel,” said Dr Thomas Ward at a family conference this week running concurrent to the Vatican’s LGBT-affirming World Meeting of Families (WMOF) in Dublin, Ireland.


Here is the full text of his speech


The War on Sexuality, Marriage, the Family and Freedom. Four Revolutions?

IN 1976 Cardinal Karol Wojtyla said, "We are now in the face of the greatest historical confrontation humanity has gone through....the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel and the anti-Gospel. ...This confrontation lies within the plans of divine providence."

Sister Lucia of Fatima has written about the nature of this confrontation and the plans of divine providence:

"the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don't be afraid because anyone who works for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be fought and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue... Our Lady has already crushed its head."

Note both implicitly speak of a sequence of confrontations against God and the family prior to the final revolution.

It is of this series I am going to speak- the French Revolution, the 1917 Russian October Revolution, the 1968 Sexual Revolution and today's apparent Vatican Revolution.

The first revolution 1789 The French Revolution.

On July 14, 1789 the French Revolution began with the liberating from the Bastille of seven common criminals. The Marquis Alphonse de Sade who had until a few days before been in the Bastille then become a revolutionary advocating the total uprooting of Christianity, claiming that blasphemy, theft, homicide, every type of sexual perversion, incest, rape and sodomy were revolutionary achievements which were only considered to be criminal because of deceptions by the Church.

In his novel 120 days of Sodom all differences including sexual were to be obliterated in order to bring primordial chaos.

In another of his novels called Juliette a man says: "at 10am dressed as a woman I want to marry a man............ and at midday dressed as a man I want to marry a homosexual who is dressed as a woman."

Yes this is the insanity of Gender Theory, first proposed in 1787 by de Sade. He died in an asylum for the insane. He left us the word Sadism.

Incidentally the French Revolution, the model of all subsequent genocidal revolutions, exterminated 300, 000 Catholics in the Vendée.

Fifty nine years later in 1848 in Chapter 2 of the The Communist Manifesto Marx and Engels addressed the "Abolition of the family!"

"But, you say, we destroy the most hallowed of relations, when we replace (home education) education by the family by social education."

"The bourgeois clap-trap about the family and education, about the hallowed co-relation of parents and child,"

Communism was based on the abolition of the family and specifically targeted the abolition of the hallowed - their word- i.e the God given- right of parents to be the Primary Educators of their children.
Marxism has been the merciless enemy of our families.

It has also cost150 million lives.

Some sixty nine years later in 1917 The Second Revolution, the October Revolution broke out.Marxism was exported from West to East when in the words of Winston Churchill

"the German Generals transported Lenin in a sealed truck like a plague bacillus from Switzerland into Russia."

Three years later in 1920 Aleksandra Kollontai, the first Soviet People'sCommissar for Social Welfare wrote-

"Communist society will take upon itself all the duties involved in the education of a child."

The natural family was to be replaced with a great universal socialist family. To this end divorce was legalised in 1918, abortion in 1920 and homosexuality de-criminalized in 1922.

It is a little known fact that the first gay pride march took place in 1918 when Moscow lesbians walked through the Red Square with banners saying "down with shame".

To further destroy the family Trotsky promoted both the extreme free love ideology of Freud's student, Wilhelm Reich and the ideas of Vera Schmidt affirming infant sexuality.

Late in 1922 Lenin initiated a large meeting of experts at the Marx-Engels Institute in Moscow to consider why the Bolshevik Revolution had not swept into Europe and America.

They concluded that as long as people in Western Europe and America had hope based upon the belief in God that these societies would never reach the state of hopelessness and alienation necessary for a socialist revolution. Therefore our Judaeo-Christian legacy must first be destabilised and then destroyed.Their chosen means was to be a sexual and culture Revolution which would affect man at his deepest being.

This meeting is authoritatively considered to have been more harmful to Western civilization than the Bolshevik Revolution itself.

I would like to mention two of its most influential thinkers, Willi Munzeberg and Georg Lukacs.

Munzenberg recommended that intellectuals be organised and then used "to make Western civilisation stink"because only then with all of our values corrupted could the dictatorship of the proletariat be imposed.
Wi lli did live to see his huge success. Stalin considered him a revisionist and had him hunted him down and hung him from a tree in Provence.

Georg Lukacs developed the other key idea, 'Revolution and Eros' - sexual instinct used as an instrument of destruction.

On Lenin's death in 1924 Stalin considered these Marxist theoreticians to be revisionists.

They fled : Lukacs to Frankfurt University where he chaired the first meeting of a group of Communist-oriented social- scientists which led to the foundation of the Frankfurt School.

With the arrival of Hitler the Frankfurt School was closed down, its members then fled to the U.S taking up key places in Harvard, Columbia, Princeton and Berkeley. From these hub universities they successfully spread their ideology of world revolution using the vast commercial, media and academic resources of the United States.

Of the two types of revolution political and cultural they preferred the patient,long term and apparently milder variety of Cultural Marxism focusing on family,sexuality,education, the media and popular culture. Their intention was the total destruction of the family and therefore of society. They exploited Freud's idea of 'pansexualism' with an
onslaught on sexual normality undermining the specific roles of the father and mother and the traditional relationships between men and women .

Faithful to Marx they strategically attacked the rights of parents when as Primary Educators and Protectors of their children they opposed the violation of their innocence,modesty and chastity by school based sexual and homosexual indoctrination.

The Frankfurt School The Quiet Revolution rolls forward

Political correctness is the child of the Frankfurt School it attempts to mould language, thoughts and behaviour to conform with Cultural Marxism.

By declaring certain topics off-limits or even hate crimes it endeavours to enforce a new non Christian or rather anti-Christian morality. It constructs new words to create PC slogans of intimidation
which can then be used in allegations of hate crimes. The Canadian Professor Jordan Peterson is outstanding for his defence of our freedom of thought and speech by denouncing neo-Marxist ideologues who indoctrinate that all truth is subjective, that all sex differences are socially constructed and that we Christians are haters or even fascists.

Marx's vision of the destruction of the God given relationship of parents and child, by replacing education by the family with education by the State is shared by the Population Lobby.

I would like to share a personal anecdote with you.

In 1980 I interviewed one of the permanent ecologists at the UN, a Catholic with seven children. He explained that the attack on the parent the Primary Educator was totally organised.

He then told me his story.

He had been offered the job of contraceptive and abortion motivation for the Third World by the UN. He added that after the armaments industry the contraceptive and abortion industry was the second largest multinational in the world. In order to find out who was behind the agenda he kept putting off taking the job. He was repeatedly and lavishly entertained by some of the most senior people in American industry who all encouraged him to accept. All very senior Freemasons. Finally he was invited to Rockefeller's house and offered a generous inducement. He turned it down. He was on a plane back home to Vienna within two weeks-- without a job or pension

And --of course --the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women which has outrageously instructed national states:

"to ensure the right both to sexual education, to contraception and abortion for girls and adolescents without parental knowledge or consent. " Articles 8,12,14,18, 21.

In the West the removal of parents rights as Primary Educators and Protectors started with the provision of contraception for children and the indoctrination of contraception through sex "education". It has metastasised to include underage abortion, general medical services, school homosexual and gender theory indoctrination and in Germany even imprisonment of parents who exercised their God give Primary right as educators.

The removal of parents rights reached its final logical, evil culmination - to the nightmare of every parent- with the scandalous case of Alfie Evans in which the above quotation:"the privilege of the Parental State to take major decisions - objective, unemotional the State weighs up what is best for the child"was so brutally enforced.

The Third Revolution -the 1968 Sexual Revolution.

Characterised by slogans such as "It is forbidden to forbid"its aim was the destruction of all laws and authority in the name of unrestrained sexual instinct. It was characterised by the wholesale acceptance of the Pill and mechanical contraception facilitating widespread premarital sex, promiscuity,marital infidelity which resulted in abortion on an industrial scale.

Influenced by the 1952 Kinsey Report it contributed to the homosexual Revolution.

Some of its important thinkers.

Herbert Marcuse joined Frankfurt School in 1933. In his book Eros and Civilisation (1955) he attempts to reduce human nature to unrestrained sexual drive. Again like the Frankfurt School and Trotsky he brings together Marx and Freud.

Another was Saul Alinsky,the American transitional Marxist who dedicated his book, Rules for Radicals to Lucifer whom he called the "first radical". Alinsky who had been known to have had a profoundly destructive affect on the Catholic Church in America in the fifties and sixties.

Michel Foucault in 1961 high-lit the relevance of the thoughts of the Marquis de Sade in his book Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason to our Present Culture.

He also wrote The Order of Things: An Archaeology of the Human Sciences which is is considered to have laid down the conceptual foundation of the so called gay lobby. He died in 1984 reportedly from AIDS.

Under Foucault's influence the American writer Judith Butler in her book Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990) was one of the first to elaborate "gender theory", the last frontier of the post-modern ideology of the Sexual Revolution.

Tragically millions of Catholic families are now living out the effects of this ultimate stage of de Sade's insanity.

Sexual revolution aimed at man at his deepest dimension is at the core of these Revolutions.

The crisis taking place in the Vatican is centred on sexuality,marriage, and the family.

It is without precedence in two thousand years of Christian history.

So is a Vatican Revolution, the culmination,climax and fulfilment of all three previous Revolutions now taking place?

I will now call my witnesses the following very eminent Cardinals.

H.E Walter Cardinal Kasper, "Amoris Laetitia will mark the start of the greatest revolution experienced by the Church in 1500 years."

H.E Blase Cardinal Cupich, "Amoris Laetitia a New Paradigm of Catholicity -a major shift in our ministerial approach nothing short of revolutionary. Moving from universal principles to concrete situations".

H.E Pietro Cardinal Parolin Vatican Secretary of State, "Amoris Laetitia is a paradigm change, and the text itself insists on this."

Theodore Ex -Cardinal McCarrick has boasted about how he actively helped with the candidature of his friend, Cardinal Bergolio after "a brilliant influential and unnamed man. " made this proposal to hom in Rome: '[Bergoglio] could reform the Church. If we gave him five years, he could put us back on target.*.... in five years could make the Church over again.'

(* By "back on target"I believe he meant the detailed program of heterodoxy which had been thwarted in 2005 with the election of Pope Benedict.)

McCarrick's position was confirmed by the comment of an anonymous Cardinal to La Stampa, "Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things." (La Stampa March 2),

H.E Cormac Cardinal Murphy O'Connor RIP used identical words. "Four years of Bergoglio would be enough to change things,"

H.E Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Cardinal Maradiaga, the Pope's second in command, "The Second Vatican Council.. meant an end to the hostilities between the Church and modernism.."

In sharp contrast when Cardinals Caffara RIP, Meisner RIP, Brandmuller and Burke asked Pope Francis to clarify his position and that of the Church on matters relating to marriage and the family, the sacraments, and eternal life he refused. Cardinal Burke accused Pope Francis of "increasing the confusion in the Church".

Cardinal Muller made his position clear. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever"(Heb 13:8)-this is, in contrast, our paradigm, which we will not exchange for any other. "For no other foundation can any one lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ"(1 Cor 3:11).

Jesus Christ is also my paradigm.

Given that Cardinals of both the Catholic and the Revolutionary parties agree that a paradigm shift or Revolution on marriage and the family, appears to be happening in the Vatican then what is the evidence?

It would perhaps be helpful to you in coming to your verdict to look at the evidence using the indices of marriage,contraception,abortion, population control,homosexualism and parental rights.

You will be the jury.

Is this "the final greatest historical confrontation between the Church and the anti-Church, of the Gospel and the anti-Gospel "of which Saint John Paul and Sister Lucia have spoken?

1 Marriage

I will mention two points.. Firstly in his groundbreaking interview on the flight from Rio Pope Francis made a cryptic but significant reference to Orthodox marriage discipline: "They follow the theology of what they call oikonomia, and they give a second chance" (return flight from Rio de Janeiro on July 28, 2013:

Second point: a quotation from Cardinal Burke. "If a person who is living publicly in violation of his or her marriage bond is admitted to the Sacraments, then either marriage is not indissoluble or the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is not the Body of Christ."

2 Contraception

In an interview with Fr. Spadaro Pope Francis said: "We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. I have not spoken much about these things, and I was reprimanded for that. But when we speak about these issues, we have to talk about them in a context. The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time......

In 2017 Pope Francis set up a committee to comprehensively and authoritatively study Humanae Vitae under Monsignor Gilfedo Marengo.

In his book on the Encyclical Monsignor Marengo describes a previously completed and printed version as "a rigorous pronunciation of moral doctrine". He explained that as a result of criticisms the pastoral tone and language of the Encyclical was modified by Pope Paul to be less in conflict with the dominant thinking of the time. Thinking, which as I well remember, was much influenced Paul Ehrlich's apocalyptic and later discredited book The Population Bomb.
In vain Cardinal Wojtyla appealed to Pope Paul "to clearly reaffirm the dogmatic authority of HumanaeVitae"i.e that the ban on contraception is infallible.

Monsignor Marengo's book seems to relativize Humanae Vitae
making it appear a part of an evolving teaching to be read in the light of Pope Francis's post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitiae.

And Father Chiodi, a new member of the reformed
Pontifical Academy for Life has said in a public lecture at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome that there are
"circumstances - I refer to Pope Francis's Amoris Laetitia, Chapter 8 - that precisely for the sake of responsibility, require contraception".

A similar position has been taken by articles in Avenire, the Italian Bishops' newspaper. And in his book Professor Stephan Goertz echoes Cardinals Kasper and Parolin that Amoris Laetitia represents a paradigm shift in moral theology.

But as a family doctor I ask how can one not speak much about these things?

E.g.......of the the estimated 350 to 750 million chemical abortions that have occurred in US alone due to the abortifacient mode of action of the Pill?
........of the fact that the interruption of pregnancy by administration of oestrogen was first reported in 1926 forty two years before Humanae Vitae?

.......and that by 1935 Dr. Pincus who invented the Pill believed that oral progesterone had possible effects on implantation?

.......of the fact that the disastrous procrastination over the publication of Humanae Vitae rapidly ended when four theologians convinced Pope Paul VI that the oral contraceptive had an abortifacient mode of actions, which was well known to medical students in the early sixties.

Are we seeing an ill concealed attempt to empty Humanae Vitae of its absolute prohibition of all contraception?

Where is this new found momentum for the removal of the essential procreative element of sexual intercourse coming from? Certainly not now from married couples.

Might not some in the Vatican welcome the removal of procreation one of main obstacle to the moral legitimising of homosexuality?

3 Abortion

In a formal interview with Fr. Spadara Pope Francis said: "We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible. I have not spoken much about these things, and I was reprimanded for that. But when we speak about these issues, we have to talk about them in a context. The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time......

"The church's pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently. Proclamation in a missionary style focuses on the essentials, on the necessary things: ...........We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, "

Pope Francis has called Emma Bonino Italy's foremost abortion promoter one of nation's 'forgotten greats'.

But Pope Francis insists that he "has not spoken much about these things,"

4 Population control

Pope Francis himself has said that population experts advise three children per family.

Bishop Sorondo's work has allegedly been celebrated by Ted Turner, the billionaire media mogul. Turner is reported to have told journalists he would like to reduce the world's population by five billion people, asking parents to be a "one child family…for 100 years".

On the flight back from Rio four months into his pontificate Patricia Zorzan asked :"Speaking on behalf of Brazilians.......In Brazil a law has been approved which extends the right of abortion and has allowed matrimony between persons of the same sex. Why didn't you speak about this?"

Francis: "The Church has already expressed herself perfectly on this. ...."

Patricia Zorzan: "But it's an issue that interests young people …"

Pope Francis: "Yes, but it wasn't necessary to talk about that, ....... Moreover, young people know perfectly well what the position of the Church is."

Patricia Zorzan:"What is the position of Your Holiness, can you tell us?"

Pope Francis: "That of the Church. I'm a child of the Church ."

Another journalist asked

"I would like permission to ask a delicate question: another image that has been going around the world is that of Monsignor Ricca and the news about his private life."

"I would like to know, Your Holiness, what you intend to do about this? How are you confronting this issue and how does Your Holiness intend to confront the whole question of the gay lobby?"

Pope Francis, "If someone is gay and is searching for the Lord and has good will, then who am I to judge him?"

Subsequently Monsignor Ricca was appointed as the Vatican Bank's Prelate ad interim.[45]

Juan Carlos Cruz , a Chilean victim of clerical sexual abuse has said Pope Francis told him, 'Juan Carlos, that you are gay does not matter. God made you like this and loves you like this and I don't care. "

Cardinal Danneels was personally appointed by Pope Francis to the Synod on the Family .In 2013 he said. "I think it's a positive development that states are free to open up civil marriage for gays if they want."

Pope Francis chose Cardinal Kasper to give the address launching the Synod on the Family. Speaking of Ireland Kasper said: "A democratic state has the duty to respect the will of the people; and it seems clear that, if the majority of the people wants such homosexual unions, the state has a duty to recognize such rights."

Pope Francis named Archbishop Paglia to lead and then purge the Pontifical Academy for Life. Bishop Paglia had previously had himself depicted clutching a semi naked man in his Cathedral in a homoerotic mural. This mural faces the Blessed Sacrament.

Cardinal Cupich when told that bishop Thomas Paprocki had instructed his priests not to give Holy Communion to lesbians and homosexuals in same sex "marriages"answered that this was not his policy. Pope Francis subsequently named him Cardinal Archbishop of Chicago.

Kim Davis gained international attention in August 2015 when she courageously defied a U.S. federal court order to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. The United States nuncio invited her to meet Pope Francis. Photographs were forbidden.

The Vatican confirmed the meeting with reluctance stating "the only real audience granted by the Pope at the nunciature (embassy) was with one of his former student and his family."

The Pope's former student Grassi , his homosexual "partner"and his mother and sister were present. A video and photographs were taken in which Pope Francis can be seen embracing Grassi and his homosexual partner.

In October 2016, Pope Francis referred to a woman who underwent a sex-change operation as a "man."He referred to her as having "married"another woman and admitted to inviting and receiving them to the Vatican in 2015, describing the couple as "happy". Clarifying his use of pronouns, the pope said, "He that was her but is he."

But in February 2016 the Pope said he would not comment on Italy's same-sex civil union legislation "because the pope is for everybody and he can't insert himself in the specific internal politics of a country

In Chapter 1of Amoris Laetitiae Pope Francis strongly in a general sense supports the Primary Right of Parents as educators : "it is essential, inalienable , indeclinable, most serious duty which parents are called to defend"

But a hundred pages on in the Italian edition of AL he gives the clarion call "Sì alla educazione sessuale"

And in English the more restrained "The Need for Sex Education"

And on chastity silence. However. in 2014 Pope Francis did speak of this virtue ..in the European Parliament: "Keeping democracy alive in Europe requires avoiding the many globalizing tendencies to dilute reality: namely, angelic forms of purity, dictatorships of relativism,etc

So what do you, a Catholic parent who wishes to withdraw a reluctant child from sex classes, do when the child tells you the teacher says Pope Francis wants me to have sex education?

In his Encyclical Laudato Si on the environment 24 May 2015 Pope Francis deals with sustainable development,an issue very closely aligned to the population lobby.

But here again on the parent, the primary educator silence.

During his address to the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2015, shortly before the Sustainable Development Goals were formally adopted Pope Francis said

"The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the World Summit, which opens today, is an important sign of hope".

One year later the Vatican hosted a workshop on using children in schools to promote the Strategic Development Goals which as I said include compulsory sex education and the universal provision of contraception and abortion without parental knowledge.

On this occasion the silence was finally broken.The briefing paper for the workshop warned against the opposition of religious parents.

Yes as the FPA spokesman whom I have quoted said: "Parents - they're the most dangerous people of all," (The Times, 5 April 1974) (Valerie Riches, 'Sex & Social Engineering' 1986

All of this becomes more disturbing when one remembers that Pope Francis led 300,000 young people in repeatedly chanting the slogan "It takes a village to raise a child", which is also the title of Hillary Clinton's book on her vision of the state rather than parents looking after their children

But Saint John Paul taught the perennial teaching of the Church :n "since parents have conferred life on their children, they have the original, primary and inalienable right to educate them;

"The right and duty of parents to give education is essential . . . it is irreplaceable and inalienable, and therefore incapable of being entirely delegated to others or usurped by others" -- Saint John Paul Familiaris Consortio N36

"Sex education, which is a basic right and duty of parents, must always be carried out under their attentive guidance, whether at home or in educational centres chosen and controlled by them. Parents have the right to ensure that their children are not compelled to attend classes which are not in agreement with their own moral and religious convictions. In particular, sex education is a basic right of the parents and must always be carried out under their close supervision, whether at home or in educational centers chosen and controlled by them.

Ladies and gentlemen because of Amoris Laetitia and of the deeply disturbing possibility of a revision of Humanae Vitae these questions must now be asked-

Has, in the field of sexuality the teaching of the Church on the right of the Parent,the Primary Educator been revoked in this Pontificate?

And, if so: Who will protect millions of Catholic children from indoctrination by the wolves in the population and homosexualist lobbies and their powerful allies in the Vatican?
Where will our children hide?

I repeat my question is there a Vatican Revolution?

( By this point in my paper it had become obvious that the audience had decided that the answer to my question was a resounding "yes".)

Ladies and gentlemen do not be dispirited. Remember that when Napoleon claimed that he would destroy the Church in a few years Cardinal Ercole Consalvi replied that if in 1,800 years the clergy had failed to destroy the Church how would he in a few?

The holiness of your marriages and families is being opposed in every way. You are not alone. The referenda have shown that in spite of huge international pressures and frequent clerical betrayal every third man and woman in Ireland is with you in your fight .

At first, I objected to the impression given by the pastel colors chosen.

It seems to me that, in Ireland and in this time of renewed clerical crisis, this is NOT the best choice. In fact, it is completely tone deaf. Or is it?

Then the comments started coming in about the symbols on the vestments. 'Maybe, so, maybe not,' I thought.

But wait. There's more.

I got an email from a reader who said that the swirly symbol is quite like the - blech blech blech - symbol used on the flag - even they have a flag - of the BDSM types (Bondage Discipline Sado-Masochism).

He said I would find the symbol at the wikipedia site for BDSM. DO NOT GO THERE. I found it. Blech.

Have synods become vehicles for legitimizing heterodoxy? Vatican journalist looks at the facts
n the following lecture delivered at the Conference of Catholic Families in Dublin, Vatican journalist Edward Pentin explains how opponents of Church teaching used the synods on the family to advance their own agenda, and how the upcoming Synod on Youth risks undergoing the same fate.
Pentin compares Amoris Laetitia with Pope Pius XI’s famous encyclical Casti Connubii and analyzes some of their differences. Pentin is the author of The Rigging of a Vatican Synod? An Investigation into Alleged Manipulation at the Extraordinary Synod on the Family.

E PentinUP UNTIL this pontificate, Synods never used to be the overwrought affairs they are today.

In fact, they used to be a joy to cover – they brought interesting Church leaders to Rome, were usually held in good spirits, and pretty much everyone was pulling in the same direction.

That all changed with the synods on the family, and the reason, many argue, is because of pressure from heterodox theologians to steer the debate, with some urgency, in a direction they wanted the Church to go.

So in this brief talk, I just want to report what I’ve witnessed, and reported on, to help you see if these meetings are, in fact, legitimising heterodoxy, or rather genuine instruments aimed at bringing the Church up to date, as the Second Vatican Council memorably pledged to do.

But before I start, what is orthodoxy? The Catholic encyclopedia defines it as signifying “right belief or purity of faith,” and that “right belief” is “not merely subjective, as resting on personal knowledge and convictions, but is in accordance with the teaching and direction of an absolute extrinsic authority.”

This authority, the definition goes on to say, “is the Church founded by Christ, and guided by the Holy Ghost. He, therefore, is orthodox, whose faith coincides with the teachings of the Catholic Church.”

G. K. Chesterton defined orthodoxy as “not only (as is often argued) the only safe guardian of morality or order” but also the “only logical guardian of liberty, innovation and advance.”

Heterodoxy, on the other hand, according to the Oxford dictionary, is “deviation from accepted or orthodox standards or beliefs,” although it falls short of being heresy. I prefer to see it as a sort of “going along to get along with the world,” rather than standing up for the Church’s perennial teaching and Tradition at risk of opposition and persecution. Some of you might prefer to call it simply modernism.

So I’ll begin by briefly looking at the nature of synods, some of what happened during the synods on the family and their outcomes, and then look ahead to the upcoming Synod for young people.

Originally set up as a permanent institution by Pope Paul VI in 1965 to continue the spirit of collegiality and communion present at the Second Vatican Council, every Synod of Bishops is meant to provide counsel to the Holy Father in a manner that preserves the Church’s teaching and strengthens her internal discipline.

Canon 342 states that synods are to assist the Roman Pontiff in the “defence and development of faith and morals and in the preservation and strengthening of ecclesiastical discipline.”

Church historian Cardinal Walter Brandmüller has often stressed that today’s synods are strictly speaking not actually synods at all but only consultative and advisory assemblies. They are not to be confused with pre-conciliar Synods, or Councils, that had supreme jurisdiction over the doctrine and life of the Church and could therefore decide on doctrinal matters. Also as a canon lawyer pointed out to me, it’s not as if prior to 1965, the College of Bishops weren’t already active. They had actually been very effective for centuries in disciplinary matters and in upholding orthodoxy.

But all these points are often overlooked, and ignorance of them has undoubtedly been exploited, using the media as a means of promoting a false perception of these modern synods has having great import.

On the face of it, many lauded the idea of two synods on the family as a legitimate attempt by the Church to better deal with the current crisis in the family that many agree is under attack.

But that, arguably, isn’t what happened. From the start, it seemed to many that an agenda was being pushed. We had questionnaires given out by bishops but it was unclear who exactly was consulted, and there was a danger the responses would come from poorly catechized faithful or lapsed Catholics who often want to see the Church’s teaching softened or changed, especially in areas of human sexuality.

We had Cardinal Walter Kasper’s opening speech a few months prior to the first synod, introducing his idea for giving Holy Communion to some remarried divorcees – certainly, according to some experts, a deviation from orthodoxy.

Then we saw other efforts to force an agenda, documented in my e-book The Rigging of a Vatican Synod? To name a few: the mid-term report that tried to introduce acceptance of same-sex relationships by announcing it first to the media before the synod fathers – something propagandists call “preemptive framing”; the subtle engineering of the final document; and the book Remaining in the Truth of Christ that was obstructed from being given to the synod fathers.

There was the clear stacking of the deck at both synods in favor of heterodox-leaning consulters and synod fathers, and the bringing into the second synod on the family the issue of Holy Communion for remarried divorcees, despite it not receiving the required two-thirds majority during the first synod and so in theory it should have been rejected.

Many supportive of the changes brought about by the synods refute any accusation that the meetings have been used to smuggle in and “legitimize” heterodoxy. Instead, they say they are means of opening the Church up to new ways of thinking in order to better deal with the new and unique challenges regarding marriage, family and human sexuality facing many people today, and to deal with today’s challenges facing young people. The Church must get away from appearing merciless, authoritarian and out of touch, they argue, and so better evangelize and regain her credibility.

But the question that keeps returning is, if that is the case, then why the documented underhand attempts to change the Church’s practice, and therefore, by implication, her teaching?

True, synods have often used cajoling methods in the past, but they were always geared towards upholding orthodoxy.

Cardinal Brandmüller perhaps put it best, when he told me in no uncertain terms back in 2015 that those behind the synod had “the aim to change the Church, to adapt it to modern thinking and public opinion.”

He also had no doubt that ideological reasons lay behind their agenda. “They have no arguments,” he said, “no valuable arguments, against orthodox doctrine — they don’t. Their argumentation is rather illogical and inconsistent. And as they see more, as they recognize their lack of solid arguments, they become aggressive and try to deceive.”

That approach, it could be argued, carried over into the acrimonious debate that followed the publication of Pope Francis’ summary of synods: his post-synodal apostolic exhortation, Amoris Laetitia.

Although, as many have pointed out, there is much to commend in the document in trying to enable the Church to get to grips with today’s devastation of the family in the West, critics say the strife and acrimony that has ensued over the text, namely regarding Chapter 8 of the exhortation, shows more clearly than not that efforts to impose heterodoxy were attempted.

They point out that passages drew, and continue to draw, some strong and enduring expert resistance from large sectors of clergy and laity alike. As one key critic told me recently:

“We’re talking here of an opposition of vast numbers of practicing and committed Catholics and learned clerics and theologians who are also up against various kinds of strong and cruel pressure, or sheer persecution, risking even their jobs, as was the case of the philosophy professor Josef Seifert. Many others stay silent out of fear, but think exactly as those more courageous ones.”

The dubia are of course the most prominent example of this kind of resistance, an attempt to have the Pope clarify various central tenets of infallible and unchangeable Catholic moral teachings that many believe the papal document appears to call into question or contradict.

Several expert critics have argued that if Amoris Laetitia simply intended to teach what the Catholic Church has always taught, this could have been made perfectly clear by simply restating the Church’s traditional teaching in a clear and unambiguous manner.

One method could have been to quote from one of the many ecclesiastical documents that has already dealt with this area, not just John Paul II’s exhortation Familiaris Consortio but pre-conciliar documents. But Amoris Laetitia only makes two — what critics call “marginal” — references to Pope Pius XI’s encyclical on marriage, Casti Connubii. It’s interesting to note, by contrast, that in Casti Connubii, Pius XI warmly and respectfully refers to Leo XIII’s encyclical on Christian Marriage promulgated 50 years earlier. Pius wrote:

“We follow the footsteps of Our predecessor, Leo XIII, of happy memory, whose Encyclical Arcanum, published fifty years ago, we hereby confirm and make Our own. And while We wish to expound more fully certain points called for by the circumstances of our times, nevertheless we declare that, far from being obsolete, it retains its full force at the present day.”

For the managers of the synod on the family, however, Familiaris Consortio was already out of date after just 30 years.

Critics of Amoris Laetitia point to a number of areas of heterodoxy, some would say heresy, in the document — subtle attempts to change the Church’s teaching on human sexuality but also on morality in general. These were specified in a letter 45 Catholic academics sent to the Dean of the College of Cardinals in 2016 requesting the Pope repudiate a list of eight erroneous propositions, many of which you’re probably already aware.

As a reminder of some of these errors: the statement that “no one can be condemned forever because that’s not the logic of the Gospel”; or “[It] can no longer simply be said that all those in any ‘irregular’ situation are living in a state of mortal sin and are deprived of sanctifying grace,” or paragraph 301 which appears to suggest there are cases when God can be asking a person, in a particular situation, to do to something that is objectively wrong – a clear example, some critics say, of situational ethics, condemned by John Paul II in his encyclical Veritatis Splendor – a document, by the way, never mentioned in the exhortation, despite many believing it to be highly pertinent to family and morality.

Despite these and other errors, it should also be said that other theologians and prelates believe the document can and should be read in continuity with the Church’s teaching. Pope Francis said so just this week, in a letter to British author Stephen Walford, insisting there is no rupture with past teaching.

But he doesn’t really specify how, won’t meet the remaining dubia cardinals, won’t give interviews to media who try to uphold orthodoxy, nor meet his cardinals before cardinal-making consistories. If he’s convinced of the orthodoxy of his positions, people ask, why the reticence to defend them in public?

I would also add that the ambiguity and the heated debate over questionable passages further point to efforts made to introduce heterodoxy.

Paragraph 305 is seen by some as particularly serious as it gives an erroneous understanding of the natural law, stating that the natural law is not “an already established set of rules that impose themselves a priori on the moral subject; rather, it is a source of objective inspiration for the deeply personal process of making decisions.”

The natural law, say critics such as Matthew McCusker of Voice of the Family, is real and objective, not merely a source of “inspiration” for a “deeply personal process of making decisions.” Another theologian I spoke to said such a paragraph leads one to suspect the mere notion of a “rule,” as if it were not true or needed.

“Think of the pernicious implications of such a state of mind for the average faithful,” he said. “At best, this would be highly misleading and uncharitable for those souls, but it's far more serious than that, since, as some contend, it is in itself an erroneous statement over a grave subject.”

Voice of the Family and others have warned that the abolition of the concept of an immutable natural law has been at the heart of the radical agenda pursued over the last two years and that Amoris Laetitia confirmed this, if it didn't actually propel it. As one critic close to the synod pointed out to me, it leads one to ask:

“Why produce this document containing such novelties at all, if not to propel them ideologically against traditional and true teaching, creating a new state of mind, gradually oblivious to Catholic moral teaching and gradually amenable to radical change? This has been happening since ambiguity and new language became dominant during and after Vatican II.”

Then, of course, there’s the famous footnote 351 that allows, in certain cases, the help of the sacraments even for those living in an objective situation of sin but for which, as the document says, they may not be subjectively culpable – a concept at the centre of much contention, since repentance is needed and the ceasing of the sin for one to receive absolution validly and to resume a state of grace, and thus be then able to access Holy Communion.

The Pope issued a rescript, formally supporting such a teaching as proposed in guidelines issued by bishops in Buenos Aires. A senior Vatican official I spoke to, soon after it was issued, was gravely alarmed by its lack of any mention of drawing on sacred scripture and 2000 years of apostolic tradition, as is usual for such decisions. Incidentally, the same omission was a criticism of the Pope’s recent rescript regarding the death penalty.

It might be helpful here to compare Amoris Laetitia to the teaching of Casti Connubii.

Pius XI gives a robust defense of the Church’s teaching throughout the encyclical, reinforcing the magisterium against the prevailing errors of the time. He offers a long exposition on the beauty and meaning of marriage, doesn’t hold back from calling out the culture, and makes frequent references to God, His Commandments and the Gospels.

It’s interesting to compare Amoris Laetitia’s paragraph 35 in this regard. That paragraph states: “There is no sense in simply decrying present-day evils, as if this could change things. Nor is it helpful to try to impose rules by sheer authority. What we need is a more responsible and generous effort to present the reasons and motivations for choosing marriage and the family, and in this way to help men and women better to respond to the grace that God offers them.”

Proponents argue that this is how one must deal with today’s deeply broken society; critics on the other hand see this as just another attempt to legitimise heterodoxy. It amounts to a “refusal to teach,” they say, and seems to be an “abdication of authority.”

Certainly, paragraph 3 of Casti Connubii takes quite a different approach. Pius XI refers to the Petrine Office as casting a “paternal eye” on the world as if “from a watch-tower.” He writes: “In Our office as Christ's Vicar upon earth and Supreme Shepherd and Teacher We consider it Our duty to raise Our voice to keep the flock committed to Our care from poisoned pastures and, as far as in us lies, to preserve it from harm.”

He was especially referring to how men have forgotten the divine work of redemption and so rely on “false principles of a new and utterly perverse morality,” trampling the great sanctity of Christian marriage “underfoot.”

To highlight another contrast: In paragraph 52 of Amoris Laetitia, Pope Francis writes: “We need to acknowledge the great variety of family situations that can offer a certain stability, but de facto or same-sex unions, for example, may not simply be equated with marriage.” The teaching against any same-sex relations, however, is simply not stated or reiterated and some have pointed how same-sex unions are nonetheless classified as “family situations” even if they cannot be equated with marriage.

In Casti Connubii, the issue of same-sex relationships doesn’t, of course, arise, but there’s no doubt about its orthodoxy when it comes to non-marital, illicit unions. Paragraph 34 states that either it is a “true marriage, in which case it carries with it that enduring bond which by divine right is inherent in every true marriage; or it is thought to be contracted without that perpetual bond, and in that case there is no marriage, but an illicit union opposed of its very nature to the divine law, which therefore cannot be entered into or maintained.”

And Pius XI prophetically warns of those who strive for a “middle course,” i.e, one which believes that something “should be conceded in our times as regards certain precepts of the divine and natural law.” Such people, he says, are more or less wittingly “emissaries of the great enemy who is ever seeking to sow cockle among the wheat.” This, of course, was also the teaching of Pope St. Pius X who warned that middle courses are in fact a cherished weapon of modernism.

Frequently Pius XI repeats that doctrine of marriage and the indissolubility of marriage were not “instituted or restored by man but by God” and quotes four times Matthew Chapter 19 verse 6: "What God hath joined together let no man put asunder."

And in paragraph 85, Pius XI presciently points out how, and I quote, “advocates of the neo-paganism of today… day by day, more and more vehemently… continue by legislation to attack the indissolubility of the marriage bond.” Although Amoris Laetitia frequently upholds the importance of the marriage bond, there is no reference to how it is under attack, and then capitulates by allowing some remarried divorcees access to the Sacraments — a step which critics say makes a mockery of the marriage bond and of the Sacraments.

One last point to note on this is that whereas Amoris Laetitia largely quotes from bishops’ conferences, 20th [century] intellectuals favored by Pope Francis, post conciliar popes, and a few — what some Dominicans say are misused — references to St. Thomas Aquinas, Casti Connubii draws heavily on St. Augustine, Holy Scripture, the Gospels, Leo XIII, and references to St. Gregory the Great, St. Thomas, St. Robert Bellarmine, and the Council of Trent. It also quotes the apostolic constitution of Innocent X, 1653, against Jansenism, condemning the assertion put forth in Amoris Laetitia that “some of God's commandments cannot be observed by just men with the strength they have in the present state, even if they wish and strive to observe them; nor do they have the grace that would make their observance possible.”

Let’s move on now to this October’s synod on young people, the faith and vocational discernment.

The working document which came out earlier this year is revealing in that, although it contains many laudable references to real challenges facing today’s young faithful, it has also caused alarm by what it also includes. Could the laudable references also be a ploy to cover a gradual drift towards legitimizing heterodoxy? Let’s have a look.

The document recognizes young people’s need for good role models, accompaniment and authentic discernment in seeking a vocation, confronting the cultural challenges of globalization, the importance of the family in formation and the universal call to holiness.

It also emphasizes the need for catechesis, the practice of charity and for young Catholics not only to have a better understanding of the Church’s social doctrine but also to be active in politics. It further recognizes the detrimental effects of an absence of fatherhood, especially in the West, which can affect spiritual paternity.

But it also refers to those young people who wish to move away from traditions because such traditions are “stuck in the past” or “out of ‘fashion,’” while at the same time singling out other young people who “seek their identity by taking root in familiar traditions and striving to be faithful to the education they have received.”

Also interestingly, perhaps reflective of today’s hyper-sexualized society rather than heterodoxy per se, the document is laden with references to sexuality (25 mentions in total, compared to Jesus who is referenced 17 times).

In controversial passages which point to the synod being agenda-driven, it proposes that “many” young people believe “the question of sexuality must be discussed more openly and without prejudice.” It also uses the loaded acronym “LGBT” used by the homosexual movement — instead of what the Church has hitherto used (those “suffering same-sex attraction”) and appears to place heterosexual and homosexual couples on the same level while omitting to reassert the Church’s teaching that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.”

And although it mentions young Catholics who wish to uphold and deepen the Church’s teachings “despite their unpopularity,” the instrumentum laboris also highlights other young people who want Church leaders “to deal concretely with controversial issues such as homosexuality and gender issues,” which it says “young people already discuss freely and without taboos.”

Nowhere is the Church’s teaching on these matters reinforced to counterbalance an overly free and all-round acceptance of disordered sexual practices, homosexual or otherwise. Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, the secretary-general of the Synod of Bishops, said the reason the Church is engaging with members of the LGBT community is because “we are open. We don't want to be closed in on ourselves.”

In the Church, “there are many areas, there is freedom for people to express themselves — on the right, left, center, north and south — this is all possible,” he said, adding that “this is why we are willing to listen to people with different opinions.”

He also said the term LGBT was used because it was “mentioned in the pre-synodal document” that came out of a pre-synodal meeting with young people in March, although LifeSiteNews discovered that the LGBT term in fact wasn’t used in the pre-synodal document. (Some have also noted several disturbing pictures associated with the event, such as a girl wrapped in a rainbow flag, the emblem of the homosexual movement, published on the synod’s website).

The homosexual New Ways Ministry said the use of the acronym was an “intriguing” and important development that signified an “evolution” in the Vatican’s approach to LGBT issues.

The document also states, “international research shows that many young people face inequality and discrimination because of their gender, social class, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, geographical location, disability or ethnicity.”

Observers have noted that much of the input for the working document has come from multiple choice questionnaires given directly to young people, and which were skewed to create a desired response that would pave the way to a departure from Church principles on marriage and the family.

The working document will serve to generate debate and talking points at the synod which the synod fathers will be free to accept or reject, but the concern is that an agenda and path towards heterodoxy regarding the Church’s teaching on human sexuality has already been set.

Some believe this is simply the culmination of an agenda that’s been pushed since before Francis’ election: to legitimize not so much heterodoxy as homosexual relationships within the Church.

Julia Meloni, writing recently on the upcoming synod in Crisis Magazine, pointed to the ghost of Cardinal Carlo Martini whose blueprint for today’s modern Church can be seen in many of the actions of this pontificate. Martini endorsed same-sex civil unions before his death, had always dissented from Humanae vitae, and also wanted to use young “prophets” to revolutionize the Church. He said it would “never occur” to him to “judge” homosexual couples.

A key figure behind the synods has been Archbishop Bruno Forte, a follower of the late cardinal, who wrote the infamous mid-term report at the synod on the family. But for this synod, Jesuit Fr. Giacomo Costa, Vice President of the Martini Foundation, was handpicked by the Pope to help lead the synod as a special secretary and was a leading figure behind the instrumentum laboris. Meloni points out that Fr. Costa’s writings have promoted same-sex couples’ struggle for “social and civil rights.”

To add to these developments, last month the Pope chose four cardinals as present delegates. It was noticed that strangely all of them came from the periphery (Iraq, Burma, Madagascar and Papua New Guinea) and know little about challenges facing youth, which are arguably greatest in the West. Some think they were chosen because they are more likely to easily accept whatever agenda is finally pushed through, but on the other hand, the Church in the global south is often more conservative, so it’s hard to say.

What does appear to be clear is that efforts seem to be in place to prevent traditional voices having any sort of a key influence, something critics of the synod say is likely to compromise and thwart the very spirit of so-called synodality.

It’s not all a bleak picture. Many of the young people who took part in the pre-synodal meetings were grateful for the experience: for the chance to dialogue with Church leaders and to be felt listened to.

But as with the synods on the family, what is evident to even an impartial observer, is that many figures behind the meeting are in favour of an agenda, whether conscious of it or not.

And that agenda appears to be to make the Church move with the times rather than move the times — to paraphrase Chesterton. Or as a former Vatican official more darkly said to me: “To accept the poison of the times rather than to salt them, thus leaving souls easy prey to practices that rot the soul and compromise their eternal salvation.”

We also have the Synod on the Amazon to come in 2019 which looks set to tinker with priestly celibacy, and some continue to be concerned that the youth synod will be used to change Humanae Vitae on its 50th anniversary.

From what I’ve discussed, I therefore think it’s safe to argue that synods under this pontificate have been attempts to introduce heterodoxy. When you put it together with comments from Church leaders such as Cardinal Walter Kasper who called Amoris a revolution and Cardinal Pietro Parolin who said it represents a paradigm shift, it seems very clear.

*And I can say, looking objectively at all the facts and evidence, it’s absolutely clear that there is a move by some senior prelates and clergy to have active homosexuality accepted as normal within the Church.

What remains unclear, given the rancor, hostility and opposition that has come from these synods, is whether the introduction of such heterodoxy has been legitimized.

In the light of truth and faith, heterodoxy can never be truly legitimized, but it can be perceived to be approved in the eyes of the general public, helped in large part by the mainstream media which is rarely, if ever, respectful of Catholic orthodoxy.

That may be all the leaders of this push towards heterodoxy need and want, and on that score at least, they look to be succeeding.

But I’d like to end on a hopeful note by quoting Timothy Tindal-Robertson, president of the World Apostolate of Fatima of England and Wales who asked that I pass on this message to you which I’ve shortened slightly:

“We know,” he said, that “Our Lady will save the Church through the triumph of her Immaculate Heart, as she promised in the July apparition. What we do not know is how bad things will get up to the moment of her intervention,” because of the continued failure to live the message of Fatima and failure of bishops to promote it.

He therefore advises doing what Our Lady instructed: reciting the daily Rosary, praying, doing penance and offering up one’s trials, suffering and sacrifices, and trying to comply with her request for the five First Saturdays devotion in reparation for the blasphemies and ingratitude with which her Immaculate Heart is pierced.

If followed, he says, Mary’s message “cannot fail to deliver and raise up the Church, strengthen people’s faith and overcome current evils.”

 Former Papal Nuncio: Pope Francis knew about McCarrick, covered for him “to the bitter end”

STEVE SKOJEC reports for OnePeterFive : 'In an eleven-page public statement, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, former papal nuncio to the United States, has made explosive claims pertaining to the knowledge and complicity of Pope Francis as well as that of Cardinals Wuerl, Sodano, Bertone, and Parolin concerning the abuses perpetrated by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.

Viganò claims that Pope Benedict XVI had imposed sanctions on Cardinal McCarrick “similar to those now imposed on him by Pope Francis”. According to Diane Mongagna of LifeSiteNews, who provided an English translation of Viganò’s statement in an August 25 report (from which all subsequent excerpts in this story are taken), “Viganò personally spoke with Francis about the gravity of McCarrick’s abuse soon after his election in 2013.”

Aware that the pope was informed about the evil actions of McCarrick shortly after his election, Viganò has taken the unprecedented step of calling for his resignation. “Although he knew that he [McCarrick] was a corrupt man,” says Vigano, the pope “covered for him to the bitter end.”

Montagna writes that the former nuncio says that despite his warnings,

Francis “continued to cover him” and not only did he “not take into account the sanctions that Pope Benedict had imposed on him” but also made McCarrick “his trusted counselor” who helped him to appoint a number of bishops in the United States, including Cardinals Blase Cupich of Chicago and Joseph Tobin of Newark.

Archbishop Viganò also implicates Cardinals Sodano, Bertone and Parolin in the cover-up and insists various other cardinals and bishops were well aware, including Cardinal Donald Wuerl, McCarrick’s successor as Archbishop of Washington D.C.

“I myself brought up the subject with Cardinal Wuerl on several occasions, and I certainly didn’t need to go into detail because it was immediately clear to me that he was fully aware of it,” he writes. Cardinal Wuerl’s “recent statements that he knew nothing about it … are absolutely laughable. He lies shamelessly.”

“Cardinal Wuerl, well aware of the continuous abuses committed by Cardinal McCarrick and the sanctions imposed on him by Pope Benedict, transgressing the Pope’s order, also allowed him to reside at a seminary in Washington D.C. In doing so, he put other seminarians at risk,” he attests.

Citing his advancing age and the dictates of his conscience, Viganò states that he believes he was obligated to reveal the truth about this matter, because “the corruption has reached the very top of the Church’s hierarchy.” The former nuncio writes:

“To restore the beauty of holiness to the face of the Bride of Christ, which is terribly disfigured by so many abominable crimes, and if we truly want to free the Church from the fetid swamp into which she has fallen, we must have the courage to tear down the culture of secrecy and publicly confess the truths we have kept hidden. We must tear down the conspiracy of silence with which the bishops and priests have protected themselves at the expense of their faithful, a conspiracy of silence that in the eyes of the world risks making the Church look like a sect, a conspiracy of silence not so dissimilar from the one that prevails in the mafia. ‘Whatever you have said in the dark…shall be proclaimed from the housetops.”

Viganò claims that he wrote a memo on documents pertaining to the matter of McCarrick’s illict activities as Delegate for Pontifical Representations in December, 2006. “I wrote to my superiors,” says Viganò, “Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and the Substitute Leonardo Sandri, that the facts attributed to McCarrick by (father Gregory) Littleton (of Charlotte, NC) were of such gravity and vileness as to provoke bewilderment, a sense of disgust, deep sorrow and bitterness in the reader, and that they constituted the crimes of seducing, requesting depraved acts of seminarians and priests, repeatedly and simultaneously with several people, derision of a young seminarian who tried to resist the Archbishop’s seductions in the presence of two other priests, absolution of the accomplices in these depraved acts, sacrilegious celebration of the Eucharist with the same priests after committing such acts.”

Viganò says that he ended his memo by repeating to his superiors that he “thought it was necessary to intervene as soon as possible by removing the cardinal’s hat from Cardinal McCarrick and that he should be subjected to the sanctions established by the Code of Canon Law, which also provide for reduction to the lay state.”

Viganò says that Pope Benedict did, in fact, impose sanctions on McCarrick, indicating that he was to leave the seminary where he lived in residence, was forbidden from offering public Masses or participating in Public meetings, was prohibited from lectures and traveling and was instructed to live a life of prayer and penance — restrictions that were communicated to McCarrick by then papal nuncio to the United States Pietro Sambi.

As regards the knowledge of Cardinal Wuerl about his predecessor, Viganò states that he personally “brought up the subject” with him on “several occasions,” and that he “certainly didn’t need to go into detail because it was immediately clear to me that he was fully aware of it.” Of his Wuerl’s recent claims of ignorance of the illicit activities of McCarrick, Viganò calls them “absolutely laughable.” “The Cardinal,” claims Viganò, “lies shamelessly and prevails upon his Chancellor, Monsgignor Antonicelli, to lie as well.”

Viganò also says that his “conscience requires” the he disclose facts that he has “experienced personally” regarding the knowledge of Pope Francis in the McCarrick affair — facts that “have dramatic significance, which as Bishop, sharing the collegial responsibility of all the bishops for the universal Church,” do not allow him to remain silent. “I state here,” says Viganò, “ready to reaffirm them under oath by calling on God as my witness.”

Recounting a story in which he spoke with Francis in a private audience shortly after his election, Viganò says:

[T]he Pope asked me in a deceitful way: “What is Cardinal McCarrick like?” I answered him with complete frankness and, if you want, with great naiveté: “Holy Father, I don’t know if you know Cardinal McCarrick, but if you ask the Congregation for Bishops there is a dossier this thick about him. He corrupted generations of seminarians and priests and Pope Benedict ordered him to withdraw to a life of prayer and penance.” The Pope did not make the slightest comment about those very grave words of mine and did not show any expression of surprise on his face, as if he had already known the matter for some time, and he immediately changed the subject. But then, what was the Pope’s purpose in asking me that question: “What is Cardinal McCarrick like?” He clearly wanted to find out if I was an ally of McCarrick or not.

Viganò continues:

It was also clear that, from the time of Pope Francis’s election, McCarrick, now free from all constraints, had felt free to travel continuously, to give lectures and interviews. In a team effort with Cardinal Rodriguez Maradiaga, he had become the kingmaker for appointments in the Curia and the United States, and the most listened to advisor in the Vatican for relations with the Obama administration. This is how one explains that, as members of the Congregation for Bishops, the Pope replaced Cardinal Burke with Wuerl and immediately appointed Cupich right after he was made a cardinal. With these appointments the Nunciature in Washington was now out of the picture in the appointment of bishops.


Even in the tragic affair of McCarrick, Pope Francis’s behavior was no different. He knew from at least June 23, 2013 that McCarrick was a serial predator. Although he knew that he was a corrupt man, he covered for him to the bitter end; indeed, he made McCarrick’s advice his own, which was certainly not inspired by sound intentions and for love of the Church. It was only when he was forced by the report of the abuse of a minor, again on the basis of media attention, that he took action [regarding McCarrick] to save his image in the media.

Viganò says that in the US, a “chorus of voices is rising especially from the lay faithful, and has recently been joined by several bishops and priests, asking that all those who, by their silence, covered up McCarrick’s criminal behavior, or who used him to advance their career or promote their intentions, ambitions, and power in the Church, should resign.”

Driving the point home, Viganò cites the pope himself:

At the Angelus on Sunday, August 12, 2018 Pope Francis said these words: “Everyone is guilty for the good he could have done and did not do … If we do not oppose evil, we tacitly feed it. We need to intervene where evil is spreading; for evil spreads where daring Christians who oppose evil with good are lacking.” If this is rightly to be considered a serious moral responsibility for every believer, how much graver is it for the Church’s supreme pastor, who in the case of McCarrick not only did not oppose evil but associated himself in doing evil with someone he knew to be deeply corrupt. He followed the advice of someone he knew well to be a pervert, thus multiplying exponentially with his supreme authority the evil done by McCarrick. And how many other evil pastors is Francis still continuing to prop up in their active destruction of the Church!

Francis is abdicating the mandate which Christ gave to Peter to confirm the brethren. Indeed, by his action he has divided them, led them into error, and encouraged the wolves to continue to tear apart the sheep of Christ’s flock.

In this extremely dramatic moment for the universal Church, he must acknowledge his mistakes and, in keeping with the proclaimed principle of zero tolerance, Pope Francis must be the first to set a good example for cardinals and bishops who covered up McCarrick’s abuses and resign along with all of them. Many more names of high clerics Viganò claims were aware of McCarrick’s abuses are mentioned in the statement, including Bishop Paul Bootkoski of Metuchen, Archbishop John Myers of Newark, and Cardinals Pietro Parolin, Leonardo Sandri, Fernando Filoni, and Angelo Becciu.

Pope blames sex abuse crisis on 'clericalism,' leaves out homosexuality

LISA BOURNE reports for LifeSiteNews - Nearly a week after last Tuesday's scathing Pennsylvania grand jury report exposing 70 years of clergy sex abuse of 1,000 known victims on the part of some 300 priests, Pope Francis responded to the scandal, stating that 'clericalism' was the root cause.

The letter is facing criticism from faithful Catholics for failing to specify any concrete actions he would take to address the crisis, and ignoring the underlying issue of rampant homosexuality in the clergy.

'Clericalism, whether fostered by priests themselves or by lay persons, leads to an excision in the ecclesial body that supports and helps to perpetuate many of the evils that we are condemning today. To say 'no' to abuse is to say an emphatic 'no' to all forms of clericalism,' he stated.

He called clericalism a 'peculiar way of understanding the Church's authority' that is 'common in many communities where sexual abuse and the abuse of power and conscience have occurred,' and that 'not only nullifies the character of Christians, but also tends to diminish and undervalue the baptismal grace that the Holy Spirit has placed in the heart of our people.'

In his letter 'to the People of God' (published in full below), the Pope called for collective Church-wide penance, fasting, and prayer as a response.

He did not, however, acknowledge the issue of homosexuality among clergy, offer concrete steps for resolution of the crisis, nor recognize the role bishops have played in the scandal. In fact, the word 'bishop' does not appear once in the entire letter.

Cardinal Raymond Burke stated in two interviews concerning the crisis that only the Pope can address situations of misconduct or negligence by bishops, not a bishops' conference.

'It is the Roman Pontiff, the Holy Father, who has the responsibility to discipline these situations,' Burke had said, 'and it is he who needs to take action following the procedures that are given in the Church's discipline. This is what will address the situation effectively.'

The pope called for a 'culture' within the Church to prevent sexual abuse being covered up.

'No effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated,' Francis said in the letter.

The Pope said in his letter he was aware of efforts in dioceses worldwide to address clergy sex abuse.

'I am conscious of the effort and work being carried out in various parts of the world to come up with the necessary means to ensure the safety and protection of the integrity of children and of vulnerable adults, as well as implementing zero tolerance and ways of making all those who perpetrate or cover up these crimes accountable,' he said.

The Church has 'delayed in applying these actions and sanctions that are so necessary,' the Pope said, 'yet I am confident that they will help to guarantee a greater culture of care in the present and future.'

The U.S. Bishops' own studies on the clergy sex abuse scandal have repeatedly affirmed a link between the crisis and the actions of homosexual clerics.

Statistics from the Pennsylvania grand jury report back this as well: Nearly three-quarters of the offending priests were homosexual; over three-quarters of the abusive priests were pederasts and of those, one fifth (21%) chose adolescent girls as their victims while four-fifths (79%) chose adolescent boys.

Last week Brad Miner, Senior Editor of The Catholic Thing, and attorney and international child rights advocate Liz Yore made it clear on EWTN's The World Over that the Catholic Church's sex abuse crisis is directly linked to homosexuality.

'Largely it's not a pedophile crisis,' Yore said. 'We know from the John Jay report, 81-percent of the victims were males, mostly teens. And we know because our subclass of predators are all male, this is a male-on-male crime, and primarily with teens between the ages of 14 to 17. Those are the victims.'

Miner agreed: 'It's a homosexual problem. The numbers show that.'

The Church continues to reel from the Pennsylvania report, released less than two months after allegations against disgraced former cardinal Theodore McCarrick surfaced of him abusing a minor and various adults - including seminarians and young priests.

Since the recent revelations in the abuse crisis, experts and Catholic laity have called for bishops to be accountable. Laity have called for a long-suspected homosexual network in the Church exerting power over clergy and facilitating abuse cover-up to be rooted out.

Francis promised zero tolerance for clergy sex abusers in 2014 and set up a commission to investigate allegations against priests and care for victims. He spoke out strongly against clergy sex abuse again later that year and again in May 2016, saying abusers should be severely punished. Shortly thereafter, he released an update to the policy for removing bishops suspected of neglecting clerical abuse cases. Pope Francis restated zero tolerance again in January 2017, directing bishops in a letter to 'adhere, clearly and faithfully, to 'zero tolerance'' for sex abuse of minors.

Some have pointed to instances where his actions in some serious cases don't match his tough stances on abuse.

One such case is that of Belgian Cardinal Godfried Danneels, who was caught on tape attempting to cover up years of abuse involving his close friend and fellow bishop, Roger Vangheluwe, then-Bishop of Bruges. Francis honored Danneels, who was sidelined under Pope Benedict, by having him present with him on the balcony when he first appeared to the world as pope in 2013. Francis also personally chose Danneels to attend the Synod of Family, giving him a special title.

Vatican spokesman Father Thomas Rosica, CSB, endorsed the pope's declaration of clericalism as a cause of clergy abuse in a release from his Salt and Light Media this morning that stated, 'We can only move forward when we name the evil of clericalism.'

'Until the Church at her highest levels names this great evil of clericalism and rids the Church of it, we will not move forward,' stated Rosica, a defender of Jesuit Father James Martin's LGBT-affirming book, Building a Bridge.

Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, a Francis-appointee and also a defender of James Martin's LGBT-affirming message, has also attributed the Church's sex abuse crisis to clericalism.

Reaction to the Pope's letter early Monday included surprise at his failure to reference the bishops directly.

'Strikingly, Francis never uses the word 'bishop' in his letter,' a report from Crux on the pope's statement said, 'although the role of some members of the hierarchy in exacerbating the abuse crisis through inaction or outright cover-up has been a central bone of contention for some time.'

Progressive theologian Massimo Faggioli noted the same, stating, 'Two words that are significantly absent from pope Francis' letter about the abuse scandal: 'bishops' and 'episcopal.''

There was ample criticism of the Pope's letter on Twitter, including this from American Papist blogger Thomas Peters:

'Pope Francis' statement says nothing about 1) homosexual clergy 2) an investigation into the Vatican 3) calling bishops in particular to prayer and fasting 4) acknowledging the ongoing nature of the cover up 5) next steps. Resolve, with no resolutions.'

American Conservative columnist Rod Dreher, who has covered the Church's abuse scandal extensively, tweeted, 'Nice words from Pope Francis, but after all this time, and all these empty promises from the episcopate, what counts now are deeds.'

Marie Collins, an abuse survivor and former member of the Pontifical Commission for Protection of Minors tweeted, 'A little puzzled by Pope Francis reference in his letter to 'work being carried out' in parts of the world to make 'those who cover up' accountable. We have been told only the Pope can hold bishops accountable. Sadly nothing as regards a concert plan of action in this letter.'

Pope Francis's failed abuse letter

If you are new to this story, the letter sounds great. This excerpt, for example, is quite good:

'In recent days, a report was made public which detailed the experiences of at least a thousand survivors, victims of sexual abuse, the abuse of power and of conscience at the hands of priests over a period of approximately seventy years. Even though it can be said that most of these cases belong to the past, nonetheless as time goes on we have come to know the pain of many of the victims. We have realized that these wounds never disappear and that they require us forcefully to condemn these atrocities and join forces in uprooting this culture of death; these wounds never go away. The heart-wrenching pain of these victims, which cries out to heaven, was long ignored, kept quiet or silenced. But their outcry was more powerful than all the measures meant to silence it, or sought even to resolve it by decisions that increased its gravity by falling into complicity. The Lord heard that cry and once again showed us on which side he stands. Mary's song is not mistaken and continues quietly to echo throughout history. For the Lord remembers the promise he made to our fathers: 'he has scattered the proud in their conceit; he has cast down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty' (Lk 1:51-53). We feel shame when we realize that our style of life has denied, and continues to deny, the words we recite.

'With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives. We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them. I make my own the words of the then Cardinal Ratzinger when, during the Way of the Cross composed for Good Friday 2005, he identified with the cry of pain of so many victims and exclaimed: 'How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to [Christ]! How much pride, how much self-complacency! Christ's betrayal by his disciples, their unworthy reception of his body and blood, is certainly the greatest suffering endured by the Redeemer; it pierces his heart. We can only call to him from the depths of our hearts: Kyrie eleison - Lord, save us! (cf. Mt 8:25)' (Ninth Station).

If I had not been following this story closely for years, I would be comforted by this epistle. Here's why you should not be.

It's very late in the game for this or any Pope to think that words alone are credible. Pope John Paul II said similar things when clerical sexual abuse was exposed … but the status quo remained. Pope Benedict XVI was significantly more active in fighting the culture of abuse, but bad bishops remained in place. (The rumor is that when he was presented with a dossier detailing the extent of homosexuality in the Roman Curia, he resigned when he realized that he was powerless to combat it.) And now we have Francis, who releases a torrent of good words, but whose deeds, to this point, do not match them.

First, about those words. This brave priest has taken accurate measurement of them:

Now, to the Pope's deeds.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl's resignation has been on Pope Francis's desk for two years. All Catholic bishops formally resign at age 75, but the pope does not have to accept it. The only thing keeping the disgraced Wuerl in office in Washington is the will of Pope Francis. As long as Donald Wuerl presides over the Archdiocese of Washington, you will know that the pope's words are empty.

Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, one of the pope's inner circle of advisers, and indeed the one tasked with leading curial reform, presides over a massive gay sex scandal in his own diocese. Cardinal Maradiaga has denied that it's a problem. A Maradiaga auxiliary bishop, the one running the diocese, had to resign after being plausibly accused of having a string of boyfriends - and Maradiaga reportedly defended the corrupt bishop to the hilt during the Vatican's investigation. And despite losing the gay Bishop Pineda, Cardinal Maradiaga has strengthened his position in the Curia. More:

In subsequent comments to LifeSiteNews, Pentin quoted one of the sources as saying that he predicted four consequences of this appointment. First, the Vatican will remove the current nuncio, Tanzanian Archbishop Novatus Rugambwa, who has been a stalwart in strongly resisting the corruption and scandal in the Tegucigalpa archdiocese. 'Rodriguez Maradiaga doesn't like him, as he's the only one capable of saying the right thing and implementing it,' said the source.

A second consequence the source predicted is that Rodriguez Maradiaga, 75, will 'secure his reign for another five years.' A third outcome is that once everything has calmed down, 'he will bring back Pineda, converting him into the next archbishop of Tegucigalpa.' And finally, the source predicted the cardinal will 'maintain the privilege of continuing to appoint bishops of his choice who will always be his slaves.'

'Ultimately, the whim of a homosexual (Pineda) determines the choices of an entire church,' the source said. 'It makes one vomit. He will do everything that Maradiaga asks him to do.'

Meanwhile, over the past two decades, the Catholic population in Honduras has been halved, with masses either leaving the Church for Evangelicalism or Pentecostalism, or leaving the practice of Christianity entirely.

The cardinal is on the speaker's line-up for this weekend's World Meeting of Families in Dublin:

Tenderness my foot. Where is the Pope's 'tenderness' for the 50 or so seminarians in Tegucigalpa who put their futures on the line by writing a letter protesting the gay sex culture in Cardinal Maradiaga's seminary, and begging the country's bishops for help?

Cardinal Maradiaga is 75, and has presumably submitted his formal resignation to the Pope. The only thing keeping him in power in Honduras (and in Rome) is the will of Pope Francis. As long as Maradiaga - who once blamed Jews for the 2002 clerical sex scandal in the US - remains in power, you will know that the pope's words are empty.

And so on. To be fair, Francis has done some good things on this front, like accepting the resignation of three Chilean bishops implicated by the gay sex abuse scandal rocking that country's church. But he had to be dragged into acting in that case, after long rebuffing victims. [UPDATE: He also agreed to remove McCarrick from ministry, and to take away his cardinal rank. But if he really cared, he would be moving heaven and earth to uncover how McCarrick got away with his corruption and deceit for so long. Taking away his red hat - so what? - RD]

It is nice to have strong words from the Pope, but as Father Longenecker says, pay attention not only to what Francis says, but what he does not say. And, in the end, deeds are the only thing that count at this point. Catholics have heard strong words from popes and bishops for 16 years, and yet, here is the Church in 2018, its moral credibility shattered. Ordinary Catholics - priests and laity alike - surely know that if rescue is going to come, it's going to have to come from them.

Cardinal Burke says the Pope must 'take action' to clean up 'homosexual culture' in Church

THIS WEEK Cardinal Raymond Burke addressed the new wave of clergy abuse scandal giving insights and observations as to how it needs to be addressed.

In an interview with Thomas McKenna of Catholic Action for Faith and Family, Cardinal Burke discussed the recent scandals involving clergy and members of the hierarchy.

When asked about what is at the root of the crisis Cardinal Burke said 'it seems clear in light of these recent terrible scandals that indeed there is a homosexual culture, not only among the clergy but even within the hierarchy, which needs to be purified at the root. It is of course a tendency that is disordered.' He highlighted that 'it has been considerably aggravated by the anti-life culture in which we live, namely the contraceptive culture that separates the sexual act from the conjugal union.'

When asked about ways of addressing the situation he stated: 'There is no need to develop new procedures. All of the procedures exist in the Church's discipline, and they have existed throughout the centuries. What is needed is an honest investigation into the alleged situations of grave immorality followed by effective action to sanction those responsible and to be vigilant to prevent that similar situations arise again.'

He explained that the Church has procedures and disciplines that have existed for centuries but that they need to be enforced.

He concluded by explaining that the faithful should never be discouraged or give up hope because the faithful must always 'trust in Our Lord.'

Thomas McKenna: Your Eminence, a new wave of clergy sexual abuse has surfaced and is indicating a widespread practice of homosexuality among clergy in dioceses and seminaries across the country. What would you say is the root cause of this corruption?

Cardinal Raymond Burke: It was clear after the studies following the 2002 sexual abuse crisis that most of the acts of abuse were in fact homosexual acts committed with adolescent young men. There was a studied attempt to either overlook or to deny this. Now it seems clear in light of these recent terrible scandals that indeed there is a homosexual culture, not only among the clergy but even within the hierarchy, which needs to be purified at the root. It is of course a tendency that is disordered.

I think it has been considerably aggravated by the anti-life culture in which we live, namely the contraceptive culture that separates the sexual act from the conjugal union. The sexual act has no meaning whatsoever except between a man and a woman in marriage since the conjugal act is by its very nature for procreation. I believe that there needs to be an open recognition that we have a very grave problem of a homosexual culture in the Church, especially among the clergy and the hierarchy, that needs to be addressed honestly and efficaciously.

Thomas: Your Eminence, many are saying what needs to be done to address this problem is to determine better procedures and structures to deal with it and that this then would be a solution to resolve the situation. Do you agree with that proposal? Or what do you see needs to be done to resolve this crisis in a thorough manner?

Cardinal Burke: There is no need to develop new procedures. All of the procedures exist in the Church's discipline, and they have existed throughout the centuries. What is needed is an honest investigation into the alleged situations of grave immorality followed by effective action to sanction those responsible and to be vigilant to prevent that similar situations arise again.

This idea that the conference of bishops should be responsible for addressing this is misguided because the bishops' conference does not have surveillance over the bishops within the conference. It is the Roman Pontiff, the Holy Father, who has the responsibility to discipline these situations, and it is he who needs to take action following the procedures that are given in the Church's discipline. This is what will address the situation effectively.

Thomas: Your Eminence, the faith of many in the Church, as a holy rather than corrupt institution, has been shaken. People don't know what to think about their bishops and their priests. How should the faithful respond to this crisis, especially taking into consideration that many are feeling discouraged and ashamed of their Church?

Cardinal Burke: I understand fully the anger, the profound sense of betrayal that many of the faithful are feeling, even as I experience it myself. The faithful should insist that the situation be addressed honestly and with determination. What we must never permit is that these gravely immoral acts, which have sullied so much the face of the Church, permit us to lose trust in Our Lord, who is the Head and Shepherd of the flock. The Church is His Mystical Body, and we must never lose sight of that truth.

We should be profoundly ashamed of what certain shepherds, certain bishops, have done, but we should never be ashamed of the Church because we know that it is pure and that it is Christ Himself, alive for us in the Church, Who alone is our way to salvation. There is a great temptation that our justified anger over these gravely immoral acts will lead us to lose faith in the Church or to be angry with the Church, instead of angry with those who, even though they held the highest authority in the Church, have betrayed that authority and have acted in an immoral way.

There existed in the Roman Pontifical (the Latin Catholic liturgical book that contains the rites performed by bishops) for centuries the rites for the degradation of clerics and also of hierarchy who had failed gravely in their office. I believe it would be helpful to read over again those rites to understand deeply what the Church has always understood, which is that shepherds can go astray, even in a grave way, and then must be appropriately disciplined and even dismissed from the clerical state.

'Nonsense': Cardinal Burke rebukes Fr. Rosica for saying Francis is above Scripture

CLAIRE CHRETIEN reports for LifeSiteNews - Cardinal Raymond Burke rebuked Vatican advisor Fr. Thomas Rosica on EWTN's The World Over Thursday night.

The controversial Basilian priest claimed in a recent article that under Pope Francis, the Church 'is openly ruled by an individual rather than by the authority of Scripture alone or even its own dictates of tradition plus Scripture.'

'This is nonsense,' Cardinal Burke, the former head of the Apostolic Signatura, essentially the Vatican Supreme Court, told host Raymond Arroyo.

'Our Church has indeed entered a new phase,' Rosica wrote. 'With the advent of this first Jesuit pope, it is openly ruled by an individual rather than by the authority of Scripture alone or even its own dictates of tradition plus Scripture.'

However, Burke responded:

Jesus Christ is the head of the mystical body of the Church and Jesus Christ comes to us through the Holy Scriptures, through the Church's tradition. We love the Scriptures. We love the truth as it's taught to us in the Church's magisterium because we love Jesus Christ and he speaks to us in this way.

'The head of the Church is never a person other than someone who is acting in the name of Jesus Christ and in fidelity to the tradition,' the cardinal explained. 'This has always been understood about the Roman Pontiff, that...he has the fullness of power to safeguard and to promote the transmission of the truths of the faith, the beauty of the sacred liturgy, the goodness of her discipline, but not to govern the Church as some kind of self-made autocrat.'

Burke said describing the pope this way is 'a great disservice to [the pope's] office.'

Rosica, who runs Salt and Light TV, is a Vatican communications advisor. He has a history of making questionable statements.

Bishop Morlino targets 'homosexual subculture' in the Church

Bp.MorlinoMICHAEL MATT reports for The Remnant : ' Over the years, Bishop Robert Morlino of the Diocese of Madison has confirmed several of my children according to the traditional Rite of Confirmation, as his diocese has been a port in the storm for many displaced and disillusioned Catholic families. We don't see eye-to-eye on everything, of course, but his faith and pastoral solicitude have for us been a light in the darkness and proof that God has not left us orphans. And now this, finally, a bishop with the courage to look the beast in the eye and speak its name out loud. Bishop Morlino does this in a moment when he is under heavy attack as a 'hater' for defending the Church's teaching on marriage-an attack, by the way, which prompted us here at The Remnant to join the fight to Defend Bishop Morlino last year.

Thi is what a courageous shepherd looks like! In our opinion, during the most vile clergy sex scandal in history, every bishop in the country must do exactly what Bishop Morlino has done, i.e., issue a statement of fidelity to the Church's moral theology, specifically her teaching against the mortal sin of homosexual acts. In so doing, the bishops will incur the wrath of the enemies of the Church, yes. They will be crucified in the media, yes. But they will also be doing their sacred duty before God in reassuring their thoroughly scandalized flocks that they are absolutely committed to the defense and enforcement of the Church's moral teaching at a time when it is under scurrilous attack from within. Nothing less will do. Bishop Morlino has now done it, and we respectfully demand that the rest of the American bishops either follow suit or face the charge of being complicit with the degenerate and even criminal shepherds, accounts of whose betrayal and vice now dominate the news. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ of the Diocese of Madison,

The past weeks have brought a great deal of scandal, justified anger, and a call for answers and action by many faithful Catholics here in the U.S. and overseas, directed at the Church hierarchy regarding sexual sins by bishops, priests, and even cardinals. Still more anger is rightly directed at those who have been complicit in keeping some of these serious sins from coming to light.

For my part - and I know I am not alone - I am tired of this. I am tired of people being hurt, gravely hurt! I am tired of the obfuscation of truth. I am tired of sin. And, as one who has tried - despite my many imperfections - to lay down my life for Christ and His Church, I am tired of the regular violation of sacred duties by those entrusted with immense responsibility from the Lord for the care of His people.

The stories being brought into light and displayed in gruesome detail with regard to some priests, religious, and now even those in places of highest leadership, are sickening. Hearing even one of these stories is, quite literally, enough to make someone sick. But my own sickness at the stories is quickly put into perspective when I recall the fact that many individuals have lived through them for years. For them, these are not stories, they are indeed realities. To them I turn and say, again, I am sorry for what you have suffered and what you continue to suffer in your mind and in your heart.

If you have not already done so, I beg you to reach out, as hard as that may be, and seek help to begin to heal. Also, if you've been hurt by a priest of our diocese, I encourage you to come forward, to make a report to law enforcement and to our Victim's Assistance Coordinator, so that we might begin, with you as an individual, to try and set things right to the greatest extent possible.

There is nothing about these stories that is okay. These actions, committed by more than a few, can only be classified as evil, evil that cries out for justice and sin that must be cast out from our Church.

Faced with stories of the depravity of sinners within the Church, I have been tempted to despair. And why? The reality of sin - even sin in the Church - is nothing new. We are a Church made of sinners, but we are sinners called to sanctity. So what is new? What is new is the seeming acceptance of sin by some in the Church, and the apparent efforts to cover over sin by them and others. Unless and until we take seriously our call to sanctity, we, as an institution and as individuals, will continue to suffer the 'wages of sin.'

For too long we have diminished the reality of sin - we have refused to call a sin a sin - and we have excused sin in the name of a mistaken notion of mercy. In our efforts to be open to the world we have become all too willing to abandon the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In order to avoid causing offense we offer to ourselves and to others niceties and human consolation.

Why do we do this? Is it out of an earnest desire to display a misguided sense of being 'pastoral?' Have we covered over the truth out of fear? Are we afraid of being disliked by people in this world? Or are we afraid of being called hypocrites because we are not striving tirelessly for holiness in our own lives?

Perhaps these are the reasons, but perhaps it is more or less complex than this. In the end, the excuses do not matter. We must be done with sin. It must be rooted out and again considered unacceptable. Love sinners? Yes. Accept true repentance? Yes. But do not say sin is okay. And do not pretend that grave violations of office and of trust come without grave, lasting consequences.

For the Church, the crisis we face is not limited to the McCarrick affair, or the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report, or anything else that may come. The deeper crisis that must be addressed is the license for sin to have a home in individuals at every level of the Church. There is a certain comfort level with sin that has come to pervade our teaching, our preaching, our decision making, and our very way of living.

If you'll permit me, what the Church needs now is more hatred! As I have said previously, St. Thomas Aquinas said that hatred of wickedness actually belongs to the virtue of charity. As the Book of Proverbs says 'My mouth shall meditate truth, and my lips shall hate wickedness (Prov. 8:7).' It is an act of love to hate sin and to call others to turn away from sin.

There must be no room left, no refuge for sin - either within our own lives, or within the lives of our communities. To be a refuge for sinners (which we should be), the Church must be a place where sinners can turn to be reconciled. In this I speak of all sin. But to be clear, in the specific situations at hand, we are talking about deviant sexual - almost exclusively homosexual - acts by clerics. We're also talking about homosexual propositions and abuses against seminarians and young priests by powerful priests, bishops, and cardinals. We are talking about acts and actions which are not only in violation of the sacred promises made by some, in short, sacrilege, but also are in violation of the natural moral law for all. To call it anything else would be deceitful and would only ignore the problem further.

There has been a great deal of effort to keep separate acts which fall under the category of now-culturally-acceptable acts of homosexuality from the publically-deplorable acts of pedophilia. That is to say, until recently the problems of the Church have been painted purely as problems of pedophilia - this despite clear evidence to the contrary. It is time to be honest that the problems are both and they are more. To fall into the trap of parsing problems according to what society might find acceptable or unacceptable is ignoring the fact that the Church has never held ANY of it to be acceptable - neither the abuse of children, nor any use of one's sexuality outside of the marital relationship, nor the sin of sodomy, nor the entering of clerics into intimate sexual relationships at all, nor the abuse and coercion by those with authority.

In this last regard, special mention should be made of the most notorious and highest in ranking case, that being the allegations of former-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick's (oft-rumored, now very public) sexual sins, predation, and abuse of power. The well-documented details of this case are disgraceful and seriously scandalous, as is any covering up of such appalling actions by other Church leaders who knew about it based on solid evidence.

While recent credible accusations of child sexual abuse by Archbishop McCarrick have brought a whole slew of issues to light, long-ignored was the issue of abuse of his power for the sake of homosexual gratification.

It is time to admit that there is a homosexual subculture within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church that is wreaking great devastation in the vineyard of the Lord. The Church's teaching is clear that the homosexual inclination is not in itself sinful, but it is intrinsically disordered in a way that renders any man stably afflicted by it unfit to be a priest. And the decision to act upon this disordered inclination is a sin so grave that it cries out to heaven for vengeance, especially when it involves preying upon the young or the vulnerable. Such wickedness should be hated with a perfect hatred. Christian charity itself demands that we should hate wickedness just as we love goodness. But while hating the sin, we must never hate the sinner, who is called to conversion, penance, and renewed communion with Christ and His Church, through His inexhaustible mercy.

At the same time, however, the love and mercy which we are called to have even for the worst of sinners does not exclude holding them accountable for their actions through a punishment proportionate to the gravity of their offense. In fact, a just punishment is an important work of love and mercy, because, while it serves primarily as retribution for the offense committed, it also offers the guilty party an opportunity to make expiation for his sin in this life (if he willingly accepts his punishment), thus sparing him worse punishment in the life to come. Motivated, therefore, by love and concern for souls, I stand with those calling for justice to be done upon the guilty.

The sins and crimes of McCarrick, and of far too many others in the Church, bring suspicion and mistrust upon many good and virtuous priests, bishops, and cardinals, and suspicion and mistrust upon many great and respectable seminaries and so many holy and faithful seminarians. The result of the first instance of mistrust harms the Church and the very good work we do in Christ's name. It causes others to sin in their thoughts, words, and deeds - which is the very definition of scandal. And the second mistrust harms the future of the Church, since our future priests are at stake.

I said that I was tempted to despair in light of all of this. However, that temptation quickly passed, thanks be to God. No matter how large the problem, we know that we are called to go forward in faith, to rely upon God's promises to us, and to work hard to make every bit of difference we can, within our spheres of influence.

I have recently had the opportunity to talk directly with our seminarians about these very pressing matters, and I have begun to, and will continue to, talk with the priests of the diocese, as well as the faithful, in person and through my weekly column and homilies, making things as clear as I can, from my perspective. Here now, I offer a few thoughts to those of my diocese:

In the first place, we must continue to build upon the good work which we have accomplished in protecting the youth and vulnerable of our diocese. This is a work on which we can never rest in our vigilance, nor our efforts to improve. We must continue in our work of education for all and hold to the effective policies that have been implemented, requiring psychological exams for all candidates for ministry, as well as across-the-board background checks for anyone working with children or vulnerable individuals.

Here again, I state, as we have done consistently, if you have knowledge of any sort of criminal abuse of children by someone in the Church, contact law enforcement. If you need help in contacting law enforcement contact our Victim's Assistance Coordinator and she will help connect you with the best resources. If you are an adult victim of sexual abuse from childhood, we still encourage you to reach out to law enforcement first, but even if you don't want to, please still reach out to us.

To our seminarians: If you are unchastely propositioned, abused, or threatened (no matter by whom), or if you directly witness unchaste behavior, report it to me and to the seminary rector. I will address it swiftly and vigorously. I will not stand for this in my diocese or anywhere I send men for formation. I trust that the seminaries I choose, very discriminately, to help form our men will not ignore this type of scandalous behavior, and I will continue to verify that expectation.

To our priests: Most simply, live out the promises you made on your ordination day. You are called to serve Christ's people, beginning with praying daily the Liturgy of the Hours. This is to keep you very close to God. In addition, you promised to obey and be loyal to your bishop. In obedience, strive to live out your priesthood as a holy priest, a hard working priest, and a pure and happy priest - as Christ Himself is calling you to do. And by extension, live a chaste and celibate life so that you can completely give your life to Christ, the Church, and the people whom he has called you to serve. God will give you the graces to do so. Ask Him for the help you need daily and throughout every day. And if you are unchastely propositioned, abused, or threatened (no matter by whom), or if you directly witness unchaste behavior, report it to me. I will not stand for this in my diocese any more than in our seminaries.

To the faithful of the diocese: If you are the victim of abuse of any kind by a priest, bishop, cardinal, or any employee of the Church, bring it forward. It will be addressed quickly and justly. If you have directly witnessed sexual advances or any type of abuse, bring it forward as well. Such actions are sinful and scandalous and we cannot allow anyone to use their position or power to abuse another person. Again, in addition to injuring individuals, these actions injure the very Body of Christ, His Church.

Furthermore, I add my name to those calling for real and sustained reform in the episcopate, priesthood, our parishes, schools, universities, and seminaries that would root out and hold accountable any would-be sexual predator or accomplice;

I will hold the priests of the diocese to their promise to live a chaste and celibate life of service to you and your parish, and evidence of failure in this regard will be justly addressed;

I will likewise hold every man studying for the priesthood for our diocese accountable to living a chaste and celibate life as part of his formation for the priesthood. Failure to do so will lead to dismissal from diocesan sponsorship;

I will continue to require (with our men and our funds) that all seminaries to which we send men to study be vigilant that seminarians are protected from sexual predators and provide an atmosphere conducive to their holistic formation as holy priests, in the image of Christ;

I ask all the faithful of the diocese to assist in keeping us accountable to civil authorities, the faithful in the pews, and to God Almighty, not only to protect children and the youth from sexual predators in the Church, but our seminarians, university students, and all the faithful as well. I promise to put any victim and their sufferings before that of the personal and professional reputation of a priest, or any Church employee, guilty of abuse;

I ask everyone reading this to pray. Pray earnestly for the Church and all her ministers. Pray for our seminarians. And pray for yourselves and your families. We must all work daily on our own personal holiness and hold ourselves accountable first and, in turn, hold our brothers and sisters accountable as well, and

Finally, I ask you all to join me and the entire clergy of the Diocese of Madison in making public and private acts of reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for all the sins of sexual depravity committed by members of the clergy and episcopacy. I will be offering a public Mass of reparation on Friday, September 14, the Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross, at Holy Name Heights and I ask all pastors to do the same in their own parishes. In addition, I ask that all priests, clergy, religious, and diocesan employees join me in observing the upcoming Autumn Ember Days (Sep. 19, 21, and 22) as days of fasting and abstinence in reparation for the sins and outrages committed by members of the clergy and episcopacy and I invite all the faithful to do the same. Some sins, like some demons, can only be driven out by prayer and fasting.

This letter and these statements and promises are not intended to be an exhaustive list of what we can and need to do in the Church to begin to heal from, and stave off, this deep illness in the Church, but rather the next steps I believe we can take locally.

More than anything else, we as a Church must cease our acceptance of sin and evil. We must cast out sin from our own lives and run toward holiness. We must refuse to be silent in the face of sin and evil in our families and communities and we must demand from our pastors - myself included - that they themselves are striving day in and day out for holiness. We must do this always with loving respect for individuals but with a clear understanding that true love can never exist without truth.

Again, right now there is a lot of justified anger and passion coming from many holy and faithful lay people and clerics across the country, calling for real reform and 'house cleaning' of this type of depravity. I stand with them. I don't know yet how this will play out nationally or internationally. But I do know this, and I make this my last point and last promise, for the Diocese of Madison: 'As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.'

Episcopal Sodomy: Fear grips the Vatican

CHURCH MILITANT reports that it has learned from sources at the Vatican that the situation in the United States, activated by the damning Pennsylvania grand jury report, has forced Pope Francis to order an investigation into U.S. bishops' and cardinals' conduct as it relates to handling sexual abuse cases and subsequent reassignments of predator priests.

We are told that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - the CDF - has begun its investigation into the matter and that Abp. Charles Scicluna will be leading the investigation, just as was done in Chile.

These same sources tell Church Militant that the Vatican is deeply concerned with the real possibility of a U.S. federal grand jury investigation under U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions looking into possible RICO violations that would ultimately tie back to the Vatican itself.

According to our sources, Pope Francis is shaken by the Pennsylvania grand jury report. He has asked Abp. Charles Scicluna of Malta to collect evidence regarding allegations of sexual abuse of minors and seminarians and cover-up by cardinals and bishops of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops of such crimes. Sources inform Church Militant that he is expected to arrive soon on U.S. shores.

Scicluna, who, prior to his current appointment as chief judge of the Vatican's college for review of appeals by clergy accused of graviora delicta and archbishop of Malta, served for years as the global Catholic Church's chief prosecutor. In layman's terms, he is the expert of the foulest crimes that can be committed by clergy. When he arrives in the United States to start investigating, it will likely not be a pretty scene.

His investigation in Chile - covering similar charges as those here in the United States - resulted in the entire conference of Chilean bishops formally tendering their resignations for their direct or indirect participation in and/or cover-up of sexual abuse by clerics - mostly homosexual in nature - including secret settlement payouts and moving priests around to shelter them from scrutiny.

When the archbishop arrives with a mandate from the Pope to get to the bottom of the scandal, he will have a much more daunting task on his hands than he did in Chile.

There is much to uncover, with many U.S. prelates and their staffs having clear motive to keep their malfeasance covered up.

From the McCarrick scandal and getting to the bottom of how many prelates knew about his decades of evil and did nothing, to the fallout from the Pennsylvania grand jury report, released this past Tuesday by Josh Shapiro embracing specifically Cdl. Donald Wuerl, who covered for predator priests - moving some of them around and paying at least one of them hush money for keeping quiet about other priests engaged in criminal sexual activities - to the flood of fresh reports pouring in by the hundreds from seminarians and priests who were either abused or reported the abuse and whose reports were dismissed and then punished for blowing the whistle, including St. John's Seminary for Cdl. Sean O'Malley of Boston, who, late last week, was forced to cancel his plans to travel to Dublin, Ireland for the decidedly pro-gay World Meeting of Families.

Donald Wuerl, likewise, suddenly - and with no explanation - also withdrew from the event, even though he was scheduled to give the keynote address.

That not just one, but two very influential cardinals of the Church in America suddenly reversing course this late in the process and canceling plans to participate - proof of just how out of control the entire situation has become for the U.S. hierarchy.

Privately, sources are saying that even discussions of a RICO investigation - which are now popping up in the secular media - have high-ranking Vatican officials very worried. The first hint of such a possibility was actually spoken out loud by Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro at this past Tuesday's press conference:

The abuse scarred every diocese, the cover-up was sophisticated and all the while, Church leadership kept records of the abuse and the cover-up. These documents, from the dioceses' own secret archives, formed the backbone of this investigation, corroborating accounts of victims and illustrating the organized cover-up by senior Church officials that stretched, in some cases, all the way to the Vatican.

Shapiro was more explicit in a follow-up interview on NPR the next day.

Audie Cornish: 'How many other states have contacted you saying that they intend to or are thinking about convening grand juries similar to this one?'

Josh Shapiro: 'I've had many private conversations over the last 48 hours with other state attorneys general and prosecutors in other states who have expressed interest in doing the kind of work we did in Pennsylvania.'

While Shapiro did not directly hint at RICO violations per se, other states' attorneys general have begun laying the preliminary groundwork for their own grand jury investigations, as Church Militant was first to report Friday, most especially the state of New York, as well as Nebraska, while other indications are that states like Maryland are now raising the same questions.

If a sufficient number of states begin convening grand juries, it is nearly a guarantee that the U.S. Justice Department would also begin looking at its own grand jury to examine the question of RICO violations.

RICO is the 1970 federal law designed to bust up organized crime syndicates and their interstate activities, and it is that prospect, more than anything else, that is causing many sleepless nights in the Vatican these days.

The entire scandal has taken on a momentum now that no longer looks like it can be slowed down, much less stopped, even by those with the most to lose - meaning members of the hierarchy.

The Silence Stops Now rally, for example, planned for the bishops' annual meeting in Baltimore this coming November, has quickly picked up steam, as almost 1,400 fed up, faithful Catholics to date have committed to descending on Baltimore asking for an end to episcopal malfeasance and for those responsible to suffer the consequences and be removed from office.

The first bishop to call out the actual root of the problem - Madison, Wisconsin's Robert Morlino - issued a lengthy statement which included this sobering truth:

'In the specific situations at hand, we are talking about deviant sexual - almost exclusively homosexual - acts by clerics. We're also talking about homosexual propositions and abuses against seminarians and young priests by powerful priests, bishops and cardinals.'

For emphasis and clarity, Morlino added, 'It is time to admit that there is a homosexual subculture within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church that is wreaking great devastation in the vineyard of the Lord.'

The specific calling out of homosexuality within the hierarchy is why we here at Church Militant have called this series of special reports 'Episcopal Sodomy,' because it is quite clear that that is the issue underlying all this disaster.

Deep analysis of the Pennsylvania grand jury report reveals that three out of every four cases - 75 percent - of sexual predation was homosexual in nature, roughly the same findings from the John Jay Report in the aftermath of that 2002 disaster.

Many are looking first to see if Pope Francis follows through on his own guidelines to remove any bishop who has credible charges of covering up sexual abuse and removes Donald Wuerl from the College of Cardinals.

And a long list of notable lay faithful are now on record as saying the root problem is, in fact, homosexuality within the clergy and the episcopate. Even various priests around the country are now preaching that from their pulpits.

On the question of possible RICO violations, if that were to begin, it would be an almost certainty that the hundreds of millions of federal tax dollars flowing to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops each year would cease immediately - likewise with various state bishops' conferences, which also get millions in federal money.

The financial impact of a RICO investigation by the U.S. Justice Department would essentially cripple the Church in America, and it would be felt instantly. And from a purely financial standpoint, the Vatican would feel that hit as well, since so much money flows from the United States to Rome each year through various channels.

Holy Land  Christians, Muslims feel 'second-class' after new law passed

DEIR HANNA, ISRAEL - In this small hillside village in the Lower Galilee, a church steeple and a minaret pierce the sky above its winding streets - neighboring dual structures that are symbolic of life on the ground where the town's Muslim and Christian inhabitants live peacefully alongside one another.

For the ancient town of Deir Hanna - which consists of fewer than 10,000 residents, approximately 20 percent of whom are Christians and 80 percent Muslims - the two faith communities have coexisted for centuries surrounded by their nearby Jewish neighbors, despite longstanding regional conflict being a way of life.

Yet, as of last month when the Israeli government passed legislation to define itself as 'the Nation-State of the Jewish People,' a new source of tension has emerged, where Christians and Muslims alike are charging that the new bill is not only not necessary, but also discriminatory against minority populations - and in this town, their Jewish neighbors agree.

On a rooftop overlooking the town's main thoroughfare, Sam Hessa, a retired clothier and a Catholic, told Crux that the new legislation 'makes the non-Jew a second-class citizen.'

'If it's a Jewish state just for the Jews, what about the other 22 percent that are not Jews?' Hessa wondered aloud.

Such ruminations have been a hot topic of conversation since July 19 when the Knesset, Israel's legislative body, passed the bill in a vote of 62-55, with two abstentions. The controversial legislation is now enshrined as one of the country's 'Basic Laws,' which, similar to a constitution, is the highest legal authority for the nation.

While certain elements of the law have stirred little controversy - such as its enumeration of the flag, the national anthem, and the state emblem - it is the specifications making Hebrew the nation's official language, support for Jewish settlements, and the seeming overall lack of concern for the country's minority populations that have caused a recent uproar.

This past weekend, massive Arab protests took place in Tel Aviv against the law, and leaders from Israel's Druze and Christian communities have lodged both formal and informal complaints.

On the ground, in places like Deir Hanna, residents have been less likely to take to the streets in protest, and instead, more inclined to express anxiety than they are anger with their neighbors at the market, the doctor's office, and at community gatherings.

'This is supposed to be a Jewish Democratic State,' Hessa told Crux. 'It gives the non-Jews a feeling of inequality. In the new law you don't see the phrase 'equal rights' mentioned. You don't even see the word 'equality' in the law.'

Lena Ailabouni, a local schoolteacher, concurred with her fellow Catholic.

'We have no problem living together and getting along fine, but to differentiate between two different class of citizens, that's just not right,' she told Crux. 'The government seems to think only the Jews have rights here in Israel.'

She went on to note the law not only concerns her, but she's worried about what it may mean for her three young sons.

'This affects their future to buy land, to build a home, to study at university, and advance their career,' she lamented.

Ailabouni added that she's spoken with a number of her Muslim neighbors who expressed those same concerns, and Hessa added that many of his Jewish neighbors and friends are 'against the law.'

One of those friends, Rony Hoayon, told Crux that while he hadn't spent much time studying the specifics of the law, he believes it's gratuitous and that he hopes it's eventually replaced.

'On the surface, it seems unnecessary, and that will not change the way we share life together here,' said Hoayan, a local businessman in the region.

'My friends and my neighbors can be Muslim, Christians, and Druze and we share life together. For us, it seems better for the law to disappear, so we can live our lives as before,' he added.

While Ailabouni told Crux that she hasn't heard her local priest speak out about the bill - 'We don't include politics in the Church,' she emphasized - the Latin Patriarchate, the see of the archbishop of Jerusalem, released a strong condemnation against it for failing 'to provide any constitutional guarantees for the rights of the indigenous and other minorities living in the country.'

'It is beyond conception that a Law with constitutional effect ignores an entire segment of the population, as if its members never existed. The law might not have practical effects, yet it sends an unequivocal signal to the Palestinian citizens of Israel, to the effect that in this country they are not at home,' the statement continued.

The Patriarchate went on to condemn the bill for downgrading the status of the Arabic language - the primary language for both Christians and Muslims - and sharply criticized it for failing to guarantee the collective rights of minorities.

'It is not enough to have and guarantee individual rights. Any state with large minorities ought to recognize the collective rights of these minorities, and guarantee the preservation of their collective identity, including their religious, ethnic and social traditions,' the statement said.

Yet as evidence of how politically charged the bill has become, some Jewish-Christian relations experts who find fault in the bill have also charged the Patriarchate for being inflammatory and using imprecise or factually misleading language - the very problem that the bill's critics have with the new legislation.

Even so, for individuals like Hessa, Ailabouni, and Hoayon, the drama of the last month is just another distraction from overcoming decades of conflict as Jews, Christians, and Muslims continue in their struggle to live together and share in the hope of a secure and stable future.

Surveying the nearby towns in Galilee with their mixed faith populations and Deir Hanna's minaret and steeple towering above him, Hessa's closing argument against the nation-state bill was succinct: 'Here we get along fine. We don't need this distraction.'

Women to be given the right to take abortion pills at home

JACK MAIDMENT reports for The Daily Telegraph -- Abortion at home will be legalised in England after the Government bowed to pressure from campaigners to allow unsupervised use of termination pills.

Ministers today announced they will allow the home-use of early medical abortion pills by the end of the year.
It means women seeking to end an early pregnancy before 10 weeks’ gestation will be able to take the second of the two required abortion pills at home.

At the moment women are required to take both pills at a clinic or hospital, between 24 and 48 hours apart, but there are concerns that the process can be traumatic because some women begin to miscarry before they get home.
Leading doctors said the measures were “a major step forward”.

But pro-life groups reacted with fury, saying the steps “trivialised” abortion and could see termination increasingly treated as a form of contraception. The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) vowed to attempt legal action to block the move.

The Government’s decision comes after Wales announced the same move in June, while Scotland made the change in 2017. Prof Dame Sally Davies, the chief medical officer for England, said: “This decision will increase choice for women and help ensure they receive safe and dignified care.”

The abortion pill is two separate medicines, mifepristone and misoprostol, which are administered separately.
Prof Lesley Regan, the president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), said the announcement “is hugely welcomed and a major step forward”.

“It will allow women to avoid distress and embarrassment of bleeding and pain during their journey home from an unnecessary second visit to a clinic or hospital.”

Ministers will now work with the Royal College to develop guidance for clinicians to follow when offering the option to patients.

Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, is expected to officially approve peoples homes as locations where medical abortion can happen by the end of 2018.

But John Deighan, the deputy chief executive of SPUC, announced plans to challenge the decision, accusing the Government of “authorising backstreet abortions”.

South Africa Cardinal Napier says abuse scandal ‘rocking’ Church is caused by ‘same sex activity’

Cdl. NapierLISA BOURNE reports for LifeSiteNews – South African Cardinal Wilfrid Napier identified the role homosexual activity has played in the Catholic Church’s sexual abuse crisis on Twitter Tuesday.

Responding to an online news report saying that a high court may force all of South Africa’s churches to allow same-sex unions, the cardinal said this is “precisely” the same activity as with the scandal that is “rocking the Catholic Church to its roots.”

And he went on to further say that forsaking God’s law always leads to anguish.

Calls continue for accountability from Church leaders in the decades-long sex abuse crisis - in particular any bishops who were aware of or involved in covering and for abusers - and also for the Church to address the part homosexual activity has had in the abuse.

The Church’s own studies have shown, along with the contents of the Pennsylvania grand jury report released last week on seven decades of sexual abuse by roughly 300 priests in six of the state’s eight dioceses, that the overwhelming majority of abuse victims were male and also older than the age classification for pedophilia.

Anger persists among the laity, with calls for action from the bishops and Pope Francis, who, as Roman Pontiff, has sole authority to discipline bishops and cardinals.

Cardinal Napier has been vocal in his defense of the Church on Twitter and other venues previously, expressing support last year for a work by the late noted psychologist Joseph Nicolosi on reparative therapy.

He defended the Church’s teaching on withholding Communion from unrepentant adulterers in another tweet last year, posing the question that if divorced and remarried individuals and others in “irregular situations” can receive Communion, does this mean that polygamists and others are allowed to receive the Eucharist well?

In 2016 the cardinal chided German Cardinal Reinhard Marx’s claim that the Church should “apologize” to homosexuals after the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

United Kingdom The Lancet asks if Pope Francis can change doctrine on the death penalty, why not on abortion?

PETER KWASNIEWSKI reports for LifeSiteNews - In the media coverage of 'Deathgate'-that is, the Pope's emendation of the Catechism so that it states that capital punishment is always and everywhere inadmissible, as being contrary to human dignity and the Gospel-many authors have pointed out that if Francis comes to be seen as having authority to change a part of Church teaching that has been stable for millennia, people will naturally expect other parts to fall within the scope of his power. This impression will especially affect moral matters, where modern democratic convictions and social conventions are far removed from Christian teaching.

The Lancet -one of the most prestigious medical journals in the world and second only to the New England Journal of Medicine in global readership-published an editorial in its most recent issue (vol. 392, issue 10147, August 18, 2018, p. 532) that demonstrates how much confusion the Pope is causing by his routine interference with longstanding Catholic teaching. The editorial discusses the recent Argentinean senate vote:

Just a week before the abortion vote, the Vatican reformed its position on the death penalty, declaring it inadmissible in all cases. Thus, Pope Francis seems comfortable changing doctrine based on modernised social norms with regard to the rights of prisoners. But he offers no such accommodation to women's reproduction.

The author, Richard Horton, who seems highly piqued about the affair, interprets the 'reform' of the position on the death penalty to be a significant shift: a change in doctrine 'based on modernised social norms with regard to the rights of prisoners.' The author then draws the conclusion that the pope is acting inconsistently by refusing to take into account modern social norms in regard to 'women's reproduction.'

Of course, the argument is fallacious no matter what we make of the change to the Catechism, for the question of the use of capital punishment (not the inherent right to use it) has always been murkier and more controverted than the right to life of the unborn. Believing Catholics have disputed when and where criminals convicted of serious crime should be put to death, but they have never disputed the exceptionless prohibition on killing unborn babies. Thus, the editor of The Lancet is clearly out of his depth when he leaps from a reform in the one area to an 'accommodation' in the other.

Nevertheless, what this editorial shows is how easily and, one might say, understandably, a huge number of theologically illiterate people will misinterpret what the Pope has done and invoke it as justification for many other changes that the liberal establishment has long desired of the Church. The manner in which Pope Francis changed the Catechism leads the simple astray, foments confusion within the flock, and transmits a false picture of the Catholic Church and her magisterium. The Pope is compounding the crisis of the West by throwing fuel on an already raging forest-fire of liberalism, in a dereliction of his duty to lead the nations to Christ and consolidate them in the truth of the Faith.

Horton's editorial makes for a magnificent example of the sheer illogicality, not to say cold cruelty, that reigns in the secular world, where a woman's 'rights and bodily autonomy' are held to warrant an absolute power over the life and death of an unborn baby human-even though the child's body is certainly not her body! The Catholic Church is reproached for the prevalence of unsafe abortions, when in reality it is the responsibility of governments to prevent all abortions and the responsibility of a network of social organizations to come to the aid of mothers in need.

Richard Horton will, in any case, have to reconcile himself to living with his indignation, since the Catholic Church will never budge an inch on the question of so-called 'reproductive rights.' But that he is so frustrated and confused, and that he nurtures false hopes, is squarely the fault of a Jesuit from Argentina whose motto - quoting his own words - seems to be: 'Make a mess.'

United Kingdom Rates for dissolution for civil partnerships are far higher than divorce rates

COALITION FOR MARRIAGE (C4M) reports that the rate of dissolution for civil partnerships is far higher than the rate of divorce within marriage, according to figures released last week by the Office for National Statistics.

The Daily Mail reported that in 2016 for every 1,000 marriages there were 8.9 divorces. For civil partnerships the figure is 29.7 dissolutions for every 1,000 partnerships, more than treble the rate.

Over 2017 there were more dissolutions (1,217) than there were new partnerships formed (908). The annual rate of formation is down 85% from its peak, largely due to the introduction of same-sex marriage.

This data has a number of important implications for policymakers. Firstly, it implies that same-sex unions may be less stable and likely to endure than traditional marriages. This was strenuously denied at the time of the same-sex marriage debate. Secondly, it also suggests that civil partnerships themselves are less stable and likely to endure than traditional marriage.

Thirdly, it suggests that there is already very little demand for civil partnerships as opposed to marriage from same-sex couples. Given this there is little or no reason to think that it would be proportionately more popular amongst heterosexual couples were it to be introduced. The Government is currently considering the introduction of civil partnerships for heterosexuals.

This data suggests that these unions are not an effective substitute for marriage. Extending them would only push heterosexual couples into a marriage-lite format which is more likely to fail. Instead of attempting to devise alternatives for marriage, Parliament must concentrate on strengthening real marriage as it has stood for centuries. We already have a gold standard. Let's protect it.

Bishop Egan requests Extraordinary Synod on life, ministry of clergy

The letter was sent to the Holy Father on August 22, and published on the website of the Diocese of Portsmouth. Bishop Egan says that his suggestion was prompted by the recent scandals of clerical sexual abuse in the United States, especially following the publication of the Pennsylvania grand jury report, as well as in Ireland, Chile and Australia.

“Clerical sex abuse seems to be a world-wide phenomenon in the Church,” Egan wrote to the pope. “As a Catholic and a Bishop, these revelations fill me with deep sorrow and shame.”

Egan said that, in addition to expressions of sadness, he felt compelled to offer a more “constructive suggestion” and asked the pope if he would consider calling an Extraordinary Synod on the Life and Ministry of Clergy.

The bishop proposed that such a meeting could be preceded by a “congress” attended by, and intended for bishops but organized and run by members of the laity with particular expertise in clergy abuse scandals and in forming policy for safeguarding children and other vulnerable people.

The results of this meeting, Egan suggested, could be carried into a formal session of the Synod of Bishops in Rome.

Suggested topics for the synod to treat could include discussing the “identity of being a priest [or] bishop,” and devising guidance on “life-style and supports for celibacy,” to proposing a “rule of life for priests [and] bishops” and establishing “appropriate forms of priestly [and] episcopal accountability and supervision.”

Egan said the results of such a synod could be used to inform changes to canon law and help dioceses draft their own “directories for clergy.” He also noted that as a diocesan bishop he had “few tools” to help him in the day-to-day management of clergy, and compared this with the structures and supports which existed in seminaries to help formators assess and develop vocations.

“By contrast, once ordained, priests [and] bishops have few formal on-going assessments or ministerial supervision,” Egan wrote.

“It ought to be possible to devise mechanisms to help bishops in their responsibilities towards clergy and to help clergy realize they are not ‘lone operatives’ but ministers accountable to the direction and leadership of the diocese.”

Assisted suicide campaigners are targeting Scotland, claiming the situation is "abhorrent"

UNDER British law, assisted suicide is the act of deliberately assisting or encouraging another person to kill themselves. It is not to be confused with the discontinuing of medical procedures that are burdensome, dangerous, or disproportionate to the expected outcome. The latter is legal under British law.

Assisted suicide is currently illegal in the UK, including in Scotland, where it is a devolved matter for the Scottish Parliament.

Over the past decade, Scotland's parliament has voted down two attempts to legalise assisted suicide: 85 to 16 in 2010, and 82 to 36 in 2015. The UK Parliament has similarly rejected, by large margins, assisted suicide in 2015 (the Marris Bill) and 2014 (the Falconer Bill).

Now, highly organised and well-funded campaigners are committed to bringing about a change in the law. The Cross-Party Group on End of Life Choices was established in the Scottish Parliament in 2017, and is "intended to focus on one particular issue – assisted dying".

United States Church Militant interviews George Neumayr

G NeeumayrsDAVID NUSSMAN reports for ChurchMilitant.com -- Catholic jornalist George Neumayr is responding with scepticism over Cdl. Donald Wuerl's claims that he did not know about his predecessor's reputation for sexually abusing seminarians.

Author of The Political Pope, Neumayr told Church Militant in a recent interview that he knew about ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick's abuse of seminarians for a long time, but no one listened to him when he tried to make it public.

'I knew that he was a gay predator,' Neumayr said, 'and I had talked about this openly for many, many years. Most people didn't care. I even put it in print.'

He said that when the McCarrick scandal went public in June, 'it was, in some respect, old news' to him.

Neumayr does not believe Cdl. Wuerl's claim of ignorance about McCarrick's abuse. He told Church Militant, 'If Donald Wuerl's lips are moving, he's lying, in all likelihood.'

'And you have Donald Wuerl, the current archbishop of Washington, D.C., claiming that he didn't even know about the rumors concerning his predecessor - which is a 100 percent lie,' he said.

He noted that this 'is an archbishop who has an army of communications professionals around him whose job it is to bring to his attention bad publicity about the archdiocese.'

Neumayr got some of the information about McCarrick from the late Richard Sipe, an ex-priest and expert on priestly sex abuse. He referred to Sipe's 2008 open letter to Pope Benedict XVI, which accused several American prelates of sexual impropriety - including McCarrick.

Sipe died in his California home on Aug. 8, the same day Church Militant interviewed Neumayr.

'McCarrick was, in fact, quizzed about all these matters, many years ago, by the editorial board of The Washington Post.' Neumayr said. 'People forget that.'

Neumayr said Cdl. Wuerl ignores his flock and 'isn't going to show them any consideration.'

'He will, however, show Joe Biden a great deal of consideration,' he noted. 'If people have power and money, Wuerl will suck up to them. And he'll turn on whatever charm he's got.'

Neumayr says that liberal-leaning media outfits like The Washington Post were never very critical of Wuerl, turning a blind eye to the cardinal's 'dereliction of duty.'

About a week after Neumayr's interview with Church Militant, the Pennsylvania grand jury report was released, documenting allegations of sexual abuse by some 300 priests and religious in six dioceses in Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, which supplied one third of the clergy named in the report - 99. As former bishop of Pittsburgh, Wuerl's actions were exposed reassigning and transferring predator priests, even paying off one priest who was part of a child porn ring hush money in exchange for his silence on criminal sexual activity of other priests.

In the wake of this information, The Washington Post ran an editorial titled 'Cardinal Wuerl Must Go.'

United States Cardinal Tobin instructs whistleblowers to shut up
